1941 Plymouth Dash question

My 41 Plymouth instrument panel has a black face with red markings for mph, fuel etc, this red is painted on the inside of the glass........I've just seen a NOS glass with all the markings in white on ebay in oz........did mother mopar have optional guage colourings in 1941 ?........thanks, andyd

the inside of the speedo glass is ETXHED WHITE. not red.

Well, mines etched red on a black glass........the one that I've bid on is white numbers on what appears to be a black glass.........that gold with white numerals looks nice.....andyd

Arthur, is yours a convertible?.........that 1/4 glass looks different, also your dash glass is a copper colour?.....same as the clock?......do you have a front on pic of the dash, it looks nice........ andyd

ANDY....HERE IS THE SCCOP ON THE 41 DASH GLASS..

i have a 41 coupe and a 41 convertible....BOTH ARE THE SAME.

all gauges are white face( maybe silverish) black numbers and RED pointers.

the front glass is etched on the back side showing white numbers(maybe actually a gold color) and speedo has a yellow luminous pointer. the lines on the speedo are black.

the etched glass is unique...the numbers cast a hard shadow against the speedo , making it look dark or black. looking at an angle view you can see the reflection of the shadow thru the etched stuff.

black face is either 40...or 46-7.

andy ----- the picture in earlier threaad looks correct. i imagine the face of the instruments is painte with a reflective silver/white paint.

i looked on ebay and saw NO dash on auction.

but i did see in ebay stores a correct fuel gauge. white/red pointeer (with small red fuel marking for near empty)

That's picture of from my friends Mike's 41 Businessman's coupe. The dash does have a copper color to it.

Had another, proper look at the dash, its as follows, the guage & speedo faces are a silver/gold with a black cardboard panel overlay which has the various cutouts to allow a view thru to the gauge faces, the glass on the top of the black cardboard is clear with red numerals on the inside, against the black cardboard, this cardboard has a mottled pattern, if I hadn't seen or heard of other styles I would have thought that this was original.......was the actual instrument layout the same up to 48?......thanks, this is a great group of people........andyd

anyone know someone who can refinish the glass panels. I've run into a couple of ideas on redoing mine and I'm not that concerned with being original but I do want a nice professional looking job when its all said and done. I don't have the patiences although I may be able to develop it if necessary:D

I've heard of a guy on the Plymouth bulletin who has a young lady who did stickers for on plymouth truck, but stickers don't appeal to me right now. Any ideas?

It could be silk screened. Mine was too far gone to really be able to tell. To be honest there was barely any writing on the glass. That's why i'm thinking about a full out custom job.

I've collected a few dashes over the last several months. I've got an original 40 plymouth, a cut up 40 plymouth that was going to be my attempt at a custom dash, and a 40 dodge with all the trim. The dodge dodge has significantly more chrome which I really like, plus its a bolt in affair. However, it too needs the glass refinished.

On my '41 the numurals are etched fairly deep into the glass. The ink that was left, and I believe to have been original, was gold in color. I cleaned the glass and removed the residual ink. I selected a gold automotive gm touch-up piant that appeared to be a reasonble match. I filled in the etching with the gold paint letting the paint overflow. When the paint was dry I took a razor blade and scraped off the residual from the flat part of the glass leaving only the eteched portion filled with gold paint, I don't know about professional, but it sure looks original and beutiful to me.

Confirmation that the 40 is silk screened I took mine apart today to check and see how bad off it was. Nothing is etched into the glass just screened on.

My plymouth coupe has the ected silk screen on all the dash glass. I met a guy that did it and sent him the old glass. This glass is flat so I think he used it as a pattern for size and sent me this great looking glass, I don't think it was expensive and I did not wait long.
