wayfarerstranger
HELLO EVERYONE ... does anybody know if the gyro-matic fluid drive & the fluid drive 3 speed share the same bell housing ? reason i ask is because i have a 49 DODGE CORONET WOODIE when i got it ,the engine & tranny were gone , the fender emblems says coronet gyro matic .. i bought a replacement D30 230 engine w/ fluid drive and was wondering if it is a direct bolt in ... i`ve never dealt with a gyromatic setup so i don`t know ?? Dodgeb4ya
The Gyro-Matic Fluid drive bell housing is different than Std 3 speed bolt bell housing because the transmissions have their own unique bolt patterns. Shifter linkage/and drive shaft length is different too between the M-6 and 3 spd. The D30 complete engine and trans will bolt right in but you will have to deal with the above mentioned items, and maybe a few more. wayfarerstranger
so if i understand you correctly the 230 w/ fluid drive i have will bolt to the rear cross member , but what u r saying is the shift rods & drive shaft is different ,,, i may have some shift rods for the 230 w/F.D. & I have several driveshafts i can deal with that ,,
wayfarerstranger
i know where a complete car is with the gyro matic in it the engine has issues , but i`m not sure i want to mess with it ,& not sure i would like it .... what are the pro`s & con`s >>
Dodgeb4ya
Yes, Engine and bell housing will bolt to cross member. Getting a used M-6 is risky because a lot of them are prone to poor upshifting into high range and are hard to fix properly without the correct parts and knowledge. Sounds like you probably want to stay with a regular 3 speed fluid drive trans setup. Steering column shift lever and shifter tube next to steering column are different too as I remenber. Not 100% sure though. You need to have both cars to compare shifters and shift linkages. You can do the swap though. Coronets most always had the "Gyro" and Meadowbrooks / wayfarers had the Std. Fluid Drive 3 speeds. You could get the correct parts to convert your Coronet to a std 3 speed fluid drive from a 3 spd fluid drive Meadowbrook. They have the same wheel base too so as to get also the correct driveshaft. Wayfarers are a shorter wheel base car. Drive shaft wouldn't work. greg g
Sounds like a good candidate for a swap to a modern 5 speed or mopar A883 OD. as long as you need to do a new drive shafe etc. or even a torqueflite. Check with Charlie Ackers, he was in the process of doing an adapter for mounting torqueflites behind the flat 6. Probably less expensive and more reliable that messing with the old stuff.
