JohnS48plm Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 I was wondering if a horn relay could be substituted for an overdrive relay. They both perform the same function of using a small amp load to control a larger one. I have an extra horn relay that I may try just to see if it works. Has anyone tried this before? JohnS Quote
martybose Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 Most horn relays are not designed for continuous duty, which you need for the OD's. There is also the minor detail that the solenoid is actually a double solenoid, and you need both to shift, then just one to hold it engaged. Marty Quote
JohnS48plm Posted June 5, 2008 Author Report Posted June 5, 2008 The overdrive relay I have uses ignition for power to the coil with the coil being grounded by the rail switch and governor. the ignition and ground terminals do the same thing. The power for the solenoid comes from the voltage regulator to the relay going through to the solenoid terminal when the coil is energized. The battery and horn terminals should do the same. I'll try just to see what it does and let you know how it works. JohnS Quote
james curl Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 I tried to use a horn relay on my 55 Chevy. pick up when I installed the O.D. The relay failed in short order; it could not take the continuous load and failed the pull in coil. I believe Horn relays are meant for intermittent use. I would try to find the spec. for the relay. I am using a small cheap twelve volt relay from Radio Shack for my O.D. and another for my horns. Quote
Young Ed Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 Dads 50 ply has a 12v relay used in car alarms. It works fine on 6v electrics. Quote
JohnS48plm Posted June 6, 2008 Author Report Posted June 6, 2008 I have a 12v relay from radio shack, it pulls in most of the time but every once in a while it doesn't. Maybe I'll have to try the car alarm one. JohnS Quote
