Young Ed Posted May 23, 2008 Report Posted May 23, 2008 Some of you probably remember I painted my dash last fall and got runs in it. Over the winter I sanded it back to smooth and of course went through the paint in some places. So last sat I repainted it. For the second time I had trouble with the rustoleum with hardner added. I think it was a little too thick this time-it wasn't spraying smoothly. Anyway I layered it on pretty good and now have it mostly sanded smooth with 600. I plan to do some more this w/e. I have some 1500 I can use-how do you tell when to switch grits? Also once I deem it done being sanded whats the procedure for polishing it? Quote
Jim Yergin Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 Ed, I change grit when the orange peel is gone then use progressively finer grits to remove the sanding scratches. I go 1000, 1500 then finish with 2000. To buff it out I start with 3M Imperial Microfinishing compound followed by 3M Finesse-it II. Finally I go over it with 3M Imperial Hand Glaze. Jim Yergin Quote
greg g Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 I have found that I usually change just before I break back through to the primer (GRRRRRRRR!!) 1500 is the least grit I have used. I know they now make 3200 but it hard to tell which side is the grit and which side is the velcro...... Quote
