YukonJack Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 Is anyone running a 350 Chevy & automatic in their P15? I'm curious what length trans was used (short tail shaft, medium or long) Quote
dezeldoc Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 Why would you want to run a chevy? Run a 318/340/360 and keep it all Mopar. they are easy swaps. To answer your question a th350 or 700r4 will work with plenty of room. Quote
NatesSedan Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 I am running a 350/ 350 TH. My engine was in it when I bought it but if and when I swap it out...I will either go original, or go with something Mopar. But to be honest Dezeldoc, the 350 is 1. a great engine. 2. Easy to work on and get parts for. 3. they are cheap. You will catch hell from all sides putting in a 350/350.The resto guys dont like it, the Hot rod guys think its boring and turn there nose up, MOPAR guys will ask why not something mopar. Do what YOU want its not anyone elses car. The three reasons above are big reasons to like that combo and while others are paying a premium and waiting for parts in the mail....we can jaunt down to Schucks or Napa and get everything we need. Best wishes, Nate Quote
homebrewer Posted April 24, 2008 Report Posted April 24, 2008 Amen to that. Those are my thoughts exactly. I like the chebby because it was the 1st swap I ever saw in a P15 back in 56. It also was in the car when I bought it. I'm going to a pilothouse BBQ Sunday. Lets see how much flak I get from the purists. (LOL) George Quote
dezeldoc Posted April 24, 2008 Report Posted April 24, 2008 Well I am not to sure about that, I can go to autozone and get just about anything for the mopar same as the chevy, both motors are easy to work on, either is pretty simple. I just like the mopar better. Quote

I just like the mopar better. Look, I asked a simple question. Did not intend to rehash the Chevy versus Mopar debate. Telling me I would have plenty of room does not answer the question of tail shaft length. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 24, 2008 Report Posted April 24, 2008 I have a turbo 350 short tail transmission sitting in the garage. If you want I can measure it. It really doesn't matter if you use a short tail or any of the others. I just got a deal on the short tail one so grabbed it. If my flathead six ever dies, the 350 engine and tranny I have will go in then. Regardless of which tranny you use you'll have to make up the supports for it. Quote
kdog1157 Posted April 24, 2008 Report Posted April 24, 2008 some thing you might want to consider is a front mounting plate for motor, dont have to worry about relocating drivers side motor mount, just a thought, Quote

Actually, I don't think Jack got up on the wrong side of the bed. He was just making a very good point. All he wanted was an answer to his question. He didn't want to hear the same old story of why someone feels he should keep a Mopar in a Mopar, etc. I'm sure he's heard that a thousand times or more just like everyone else has. It does get old hearing that after so many times. He didn't ask what everyone else thought, just which Chevy tranny to use with his 350 engine in the P15, and that's the only thing he wanted to hear. And, that's the only answer we should give unless he ask a further question on the subject. Quote
wayfarer Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 ...I still think there is some sorta federal law about those shiverlay swaps... Quote
knuckleharley Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 Is anyone running a 350 Chevy & automatic in their P15? I'm curious what length trans was used (short tail shaft, medium or long) I'm running both in my coupe. Actually, the tranny is the Turbo 250,but it is the same overall length as the 350. Yes,it has a short tailshaft. I plan on replacing it soon with a 700R4. Quote
knuckleharley Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 some thing you might want to consider is a front mounting plate for motor, dont have to worry about relocating drivers side motor mount, just a thought, Do NOT use front motor mounts with a Turbo 350 or any other aluminum transmission. You will end up breaking the bellhousing The engines with front mounts also had rear mounts that bolted to the bellhousing, not the tailshaft. Quote
1947PLEVY Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 Yukon Jack: I'm running a 327 with a 700R4 tranny. Plenty of room to work on. In fact I plan on scooting the motor back using motor mounts to swap a V-6 to a V-8 for a s-10. My car has been sub framed with a S-10. As far as the drive shaft goes, I'll have to have one made. The one I recieved from the camaro was too short. So it'll be off to a bone yard to get one from a station wagon and have it cut down to the right length. Hope this helps . Take Care and God Bless.... John 47 Plevy Quote
teardrop puller Posted April 27, 2008 Report Posted April 27, 2008 Do NOT use front motor mounts with a Turbo 350 or any other aluminum transmission. You will end up breaking the bellhousingThe engines with front mounts also had rear mounts that bolted to the bellhousing, not the tailshaft. I had to make a third set of mounts to run the 700R4. You can not mount both ends of the trans and engine. The mounts were easy enough at the adapter and the rear cross member was not a big problem. I had to cut out the cross member that the Plymouth rear mounts go to in order to fit in the new mounts and adaptor plate. kai Quote
