Took the P-15 out again today for a cruise and there seems to be more speedometer noise. I had a noise when I first started driving the car after the engine swap. Cable broke and I replaced it. Noise went away for a while, but now it's back. Needle on speedometer bounces around a bit too while it's making noise.

Could it be something simple or would it be the speedo gear on the side of the trans? Where would I find one to replace it with if it is?

Same thing hapened to me, when i replaced the cable it started again. After disassembling the speedometer i found that the oil had gummed up the shaft in the speedometer. soaked it, cleaned it, lubed it and put it back in and it works like a charm.

How easy is it to take the speedometer apart? I plan on taking the dash out later this summer and repaint it. Probably be the best time to do that.

Doubt if it's the speedo gear on the side of the tranny as you said it worked fine for a while. Did you lube the new speedo cable? Did you oil the speedo as there is a location for this. Could be the speedometer is dry. I would check and lube the new cable if you have not already done that. Then if the noise persists lube the speedometer itself (there is a lube point on the outside) , and then if there is still the noise take the speedo out and with a very thin oil like sewing machine oil lube the moving parts. Hope things work out!

it was easy on the 53'. Remove four screws and the unit came out. There are 2 tabs holding the face plate on and 2 screws holding the unit together. it was easy to do.

I lubed the new cable before I put it on. Where is the lube point on the speedometer? I could try lubing that.

In my Plymouth Service Manual it says that in cold weather the transmission lubricant may be pumped into the speedo housing causing noise. This is bacause the seal on the spedometer pinion may be worn out.

I get this noise when it's really cold outside. And it goes away when the car warms up and is driven a while.

Anyone know where I can get this pinion seal? It's a hard part to find anywhere. Thanks, Ed P.

Speedometers are not difficult to disassemble. I used a drill motor to test my

speedometer on the bench. I also bought a new cable and housing from the

folks listed on the card below. Also pictured is the wick on the back of the

speedometer.

Steve, try the least intrusive 1st, the cable is lubed, pull the wick out of the speedo, get some lube in there, try that out.

If all fails pull speedo, clean and lube..........Fred

The needle bouncing is usually indicative of the speedo itself, mine would bounce and be a little noiosy, try lubing the point of entry of the cable to speed, pull the wick and lube, let sit over night and try again.......

When you replaced the cable, did that include the outer shell or just the inner cable? Sometimes the outer case gets a rough spot that will snag the inner cable and eventually break it.

I purchased both the entire cable assembly from Roberts. It was a little bit longer than the original, but it does work. I had problems with noise last summer and when I took the dash out I lubricated the speedometer with pneumatic tool oil. I drove the car and the noise was gone, it hasn't come back yet.

I think the old cable was getting very old and had not been lubed in a while. That pretty much sealed its doom.
