wayfarerstranger
did any of these early 50`s 1/2 & 3/4 ton trucks have a fluid drive behind the 218 engine ? thanx
Jim Shepard
Starting in '50 Fluid Drive was available in the half-ton. I've got one and they're nice. They should all be in pretty good shape because there's no metal-to-metal contact.
Tony WestOZ
Jim did they use the standard truck 3 speed gear box fitted with a longer input shaft to fit the fluid drive set up to or did they use a car gearbox set up.
Dodgeb4ya
A truck transmission was used W/ a longer FD input shaft. "Truck-O-Matic" models used the car M-6 hydraulically operated transmissions. Bob
Merle Coggins
I have a '50 3/4 ton with Fluid Drive and a 4 speed trans. So apparently they were available both ways. I think Fluid Drive was also available in the 1 tons starting in '50. The Truck-O-Matic started in '53, as I recall from Don Bunn's book. And to finish answering the question... the 1/2 & 3/4 ton trucks use the 218 even with Fluid Drive. The 1 Ton would have a 230.
