it's floor shift 37 chrysler model....

Took it apart and cleaned it...wasn't very bad actually...but I wanted to make sure nothing was busted.

Problem is...the dang back half won't go back together...where the free rolling bearings go in. I can't get it to slide back in. It goes in fine without 'em. I tried greasing them up so they stick in the cage and don't shake loose...but it still don't slide in. Any suggestions?

I think the book says to turn the assembly as you slide it into the drum. If twisted in one direction the rollers tend to retract a bit.

Another way is to put a strong rubber band around the rollers after twisting the cage to retract them. Attach a thin wire to the rubber band so you can pull it back outta the drum after you get the roller/cage in there.

i tried the band thing...didnt work...

so I just took the crown nut of the end of the brake drum and stuff...and put the part with the free wheel rollers inside the other part first and slid the whole thing right in! The idea actually came to me in a dream last night...wierd...

Now it's all back together...but I smashed my fingers pretty bad while testing the gear shifting...had my hand in the WRONG place! It was so cold that I didn't bleed much...

I will take some when I get home...I had no gaskets so I made some and then sealed with that heavy duty copper gasket silicone...and then I sprayed the whole thing with the engine paint I had left. I guess it should be black...but the silver will let me see if there are any leaks easier.

Yup, I know of him, and have seen him around several times, I don't see him posting too often, since then our friendship as been strained...:D

The tranny is pricey, I better start saving then.....I like that it is non-electric and floor shift!!!!

Is this a bolt in replacement for a 38 plymouth 3 speed? God I'd love to have an overdrive transmission that slides right in place of my 3 speed.

NOPE. It's an OD from a 36 Chrysler...any 36-38 Chrysler or desoto OD will fit...as long as it is from a six cylinder engine. There is no bolt on OD for these trannys unfortunately. These cost enough if you can find 'em..around $1500.00

I have an overdrive I took out of a 1937 Desoto that I want to put in my 1938Chrysler. Only problem is that the planetary gear and cage was in three separate pieces and is totally ruined. I have a parts number for the entire planetary gear and cage but have never been able to locate one. Trying to find another tranny for parts is nearly as impossible and very expensive as mentioned. I have bought a lot of new parts for this tranny but cannot progress any further right now. Also, the handbrake mounting hardware is different as the '37 had a floor handbrake and the '38 has it under the dash. I can work around that but need the planetary gear first. Any suggestions anyone?

I meant is this a bolt in deal. Can I pull my three speed and pretty much put one of these in it's place without changing the driveshaft or emergency brake setup etc.

I put a 38 overdrive in my 1933 plymouth coupe years ago. I had to shorten the driveshaft about 3 inches and it was tight getting it by the crossmember but it bolted right to the bellhousing. It worked great, especially with the original 4:38 rear gears. JohnS

Would a 39 Chrysler OD be the same internally? It has the column shift on the tranny. I'll have one (tranny/od /motor) for sale soon.
