I want to re-do entire brake system on a '48 B-1-B and need a source for parts-master cyl, wheel cyls, spring kits, etc. NAPA doesn't have and can't get all this stuff.

I'm also going to need a new wiring harness-ideas for that?

Come Spring-this will be my daily driver as soon as the brakes are done.

Mike if you make a trip down to brake and equipment warehouse in minneapolis they can get that stuff for you. Only item they might not have are the return springs. They will also do mail order if you dont want to drive down.

Quoting Merle, who helped me find mine from Napa:

-----

"I ended up getting the Raybestos numbers out of a book at my local Checker Auto Parts, but their prices were quite high. My Napa sales rep took those numbers and had them crossed to Napa. They ended up being the same numbers. I also noticed that Parts America (CSK Auto {Checker, Schuck's & Kragen} or Advance Auto Parts) list the same numbers under Tru Torque or Dorman brands. They are as follows;

Rear brake cylinders;

Left Upper W10580

Right Upper W10581

Left Lower W10582

Right Lower W10583

I believe Napa dropped the "W"

The fronts get more tricky. Parts America lists P/N W17789 for both wheels. This cylinder is listed as having a 1 3/8" bore. However, they should be a step bore type with one side larger than the other. They do show P/N W9375 and W9376 for a B4F or B4PW as having 1 1/4" and 1 3/8" bores. These may actually be the correct parts for our trucks too. I think I just used the W17789 cylinders.

I got my master cylinder from Napa too. That they listed in their catalogs, and even on their online catalog. I don't recall the number."

Hope this helps. I replaced the rear wheel cylinders already and they worked great. Just make sure when you get your cylinders that the rod that comes out of the rubber boot and pushes the pad out is in each box. They come seperate in a little plastic bag and one of mine came without. So I had to call them back up and they re-ordered it for me no problem. Just saves time to make sure everything's there to start with.

I ordered all my brake stuff from Kanter Auto Parts and got better prices on everything when compared to NAPA. They even had new shoes which NAPA was not able to help with.

My Napa guy gave me these numbers a while back.

Front Wheel

3595 for Left $64.69

3596 for Right $64.69

Rear

Mine has dual cylinders in rear for each side, top and bottom

10580 for Left $37.09

10582 for Left $37.09

10581 for Right $37.09

10583 for Right $37.09

Master

544 $150.99

These prices are years old, but may still be close.

I ended up ordering mine from Andy Bernbaum.

They were much cheaper than NAPA.

Only problem was, the front cylinders that I got were 1.5" mounting holes. I measured the holes on my truck and they look to be 2" apart.

I have a 1949 B1C 3/4Ton. I sold my house, so this project is now imminent. I have to get the wheels back on and make it rollable. Nothing like a deadline to force you to finish. It has been up on jack stands for years now, ever since I broke that rear drum trying to get it off with the wrong puller.

It is good to be back on the forums.

I have a master cylinder that I bought new from napa last year. I'm putting swing peddles in my 48 so it's up for grabs

There are several sources for brake parts in responses to this thread. I tried Kanter Auto Parts and it seems to me those guys really know their stuff and seem to be able to get almost anything you need. Good luck.

I called Kanter. My part book says Cylinders for front are 5-64-1 part type. I look up the part type for my 49 b-1-c and it says for series 1,2 Front Left is 635 537. Front Right is 635 536.

The guy asked if this is a straight bore. It sure seems like it is. The exploded view seems to show the same part number for the piston on both sides. There is no noticeable taper from looking at the outside of the wheel cylinder. He also asked if I knew the bore size. I did not, does anybody know what it is suppose to be for a 3/4 Ton?

Front wheel cylinders should have a stepped bore. I don't recall the diameters, and I don't have my manual handy right now. For some reason I'm remembering 1 1/8" and 1/3/16", but don't quote me in that.

If the cylindars are the same as the B1B the front cylindars, they will be a step bore with one side 1 1/4" and the other 1 3/8".

I have the Shop Manual, and Parts list book. Neither seem to say. The rears are the same part number for both 1/2 and 3/4 tons. The front have different part numbers for 48-51 parts list book for the front wheels. But the 1/2 ton front cylinders part number is designated as a part that was not previously listed in a previous parts book.

The part # listed for for front left on 1/2 ton is 1271 433

The part # listed for for front right on 1/2 ton is 1271 432

The part # listed for for front left on 3/4 ton is 635 537

The part # listed for for front right on 3/4 ton is 635 536

page 55 of Dodge B-Series Trucks Restorer's and Collector's Reference Guide and History states:

Front Wheel Cylinders Double Acting Stepped Diameter Bore 1 1/4" x 1 3/8" for B,C, and D models.

I guess I had the answer all along, just needed to read the books I already had.

Thanks for the help.
