Jim Saraceno Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 Just saw that movie tonight ('53 version). There were an awful lot of Plymouths and Dodges in that movie. Quote
Normspeed Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 I'll have to watch for that one. Any big name stars in that version? Quote
oldmopar Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 Not good on actors names but it is a classic si-fi and was remade in 90's or somewhere around that time Ed Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted February 3, 2008 Author Report Posted February 3, 2008 The lead was played by Gene Barry who later went on to star as Bat Masterson on TV. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 I remember a '51 or '52 Plymouth police car getting vaporized in the original movie. Bothered me even as a kid.... Quote
Olddaddy Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 War of the Worlds was one of my alltime favorite books as a kid. I've read it about 30 times now at age 53. It was set in late 1800s England which makes it all the more fantastic as we didn't even have planes at that time in our history. In any case, incredible piece of "science" fiction before we had much science to fictionalize. The 50s version ignores the story entirely as the later 90s Tom Cruise version does. Both are weak compared to the book. An English version appeared about the same time as the Cruise version promising to be true to the book. It was closer, but the acting was so bad only the costumes were recognizable as part of the story line. The 50s version did have the one advantage of a lot of Mopars involved which is the only reason to watch it in my opinion....but I'm a book guy anyways. Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted February 3, 2008 Author Report Posted February 3, 2008 It's typical for Hollywood for totally change the story from the book to the movie. About the only movie that I have seen remain very true to the book was "Field of Dreams" based on the book "Shoeless Joe". 90 percent of that book was in the movie. Books like "Cannery Row" and "A River Runs Through It"... well other than having used the same names for the characters, you would never guess they were the same stories. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 I read the book "The Generals Duaghter" years ago and it was an excellent read. I also know that movies differ so much from the book I decided not to see the movie..based upon not following the book and the actor J. Travolta..he has not matured beyond a sweathog..but then that is another story. Well friend who also read the book told me it was great, followed the book and even was able to carry JT's bad acting..boy was I duped...I also don't watch remakes of any movie I thought was great as an original..to much of a let down... I am not a JT fan at all but I will give him credit for having/flying his own 747 jet which he parks at his house by the way...must be doing something right regardless of me not supporting him...lol Quote
