Omigod!

I took my wife's VW Golf to fill up with gas, this morning... £55 (over $100).

Then I took my Passat Estate for diesel... £65

Finally I took a short spin in the Plymouth and decided to top that up... £50

That's £170 in a day... Almost $350 !!!

Yikes!!! My wife took our jeep yesterday to run some errands. I told her it was low on gas and she said she would put some in. I asked her how much she put in and she said she stopped at $40.00, because she couldn't bear any more. Just slightly over half a tank. The jeep gets about 17 MPG in run around use so we don't use it much. I have a Jetta that does close to 30 mpg around town, and her Subaru only gets about 20.

One of the things that gets brought up here is that Americans can't live withou their cars. I guess this is due to several factors, living in the suburbs creates a long commute to work, Public transportation is woefully inadequate except for in cities, and we dearly love the independence of going where we want when we want.

We are traveling a lot less (since we are retired, no commuting) but even doing shopping and such is getting prohibitively expensive.

Having gone to Ireland, we noticed lots of folks on busses and trains, and at midday lots of cars still in the driveway next to the homes. So do you your cars for daily back and forth to work, or just pleasure us?? And in addition, what are your parking charges of you live work in a city?

Plus ya gotta wonder about who and how the prices are decided. Now New York is a red state on two maps Republican/Democrat, and Gas Prices.

You'd think all these republicans would have friends in high places in the oil business......
