48mirage Posted December 29, 2007 Report Posted December 29, 2007 Not that I'm planning this but... I drive a '49 Coronet with a fluid drive. Did they make a 4 speed truck transmission with a fluid drive? And if they did will it bolt up to the car's bell housing. My thinking on this with the granny gear of the truck transmission and a modern hiway geared rearend would you have the same results as an OD? Any thoughts out there? Quote
bob westphal Posted December 29, 2007 Report Posted December 29, 2007 I have never seen a MoPar pickup with fluid drive but I haven't seen everything as yet! Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 29, 2007 Report Posted December 29, 2007 Fluid drive was an option on Dodge pickups. Not sure what would be gained with the 4 speed transmission. The better road gear in the differential I would think would work well with the fluid drive and the standard 3 speed transmission. Quote
Reg Evans Posted December 29, 2007 Report Posted December 29, 2007 I have a 3.0 gear ratio in my 52 1/2 ton with the stock 4 speed syncro. I can travel much faster with this rearend but I still don't use granny low because it's still too low for normal driving. Quote
48mirage Posted December 29, 2007 Author Report Posted December 29, 2007 There's half of the question(s). I was thinking something in the 2.76 range on the differential to take advantage of the granny gear. Now is the bolt pattern on the 4 speed the same as the 3 speed? Quote
Reg Evans Posted December 30, 2007 Report Posted December 30, 2007 Another thing about the granny gear in my 52 1/2 ton 4 speed. I should have mentioned that it is very difficult to pull it out of 1st to shift into 2nd. It doesn't want to come out of 1st until you have slowed down quite a bit. I'm not sure if it's just mine or if they are all that way. I don't think any rear end ration would help that. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 30, 2007 Report Posted December 30, 2007 Reg..at that ratio I bet it is somewhat torque bound..I remember drivin one of the 51 Dodge truck with the granny tranny..we used it to tow in broken down school busses.. Quote
55 Fargo Posted December 30, 2007 Report Posted December 30, 2007 Chucky 07 has a Fluid Drive and 3 spd on the tree, in his 52 Dodge Pickup Truck...............Fred Quote
Rodger S-11 Posted December 30, 2007 Report Posted December 30, 2007 Hola 48 Plymouth Person The other part of the gear ratio part is that your engine needs this ratio to have peak torque in the "window" of vehicle speed usage. An 2.76:1 gear ratio may have your thoughts purring along at 75 MPH, but can your engine have enough sauce to keep it there over hill & over dale ??? Look for an 2 bbl carb & intake manifold and etc from an 1956 or newer 230 engine. If you change to an De Soto or Chrysler long block, it may handle your thoughts better. Rodger & Gabby COS Quote
