Tony Cipponeri Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 I saw him run at Lions drag strip, with the Green Monster with the Allison, I think 16 cylinder air plane motor. Sorry to hear of his passing. Tony C Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 I'm pretty sure it was him and the Green Monster at the Springfield-Ozark Dragway in Missouri back in the 60s. As part of the show, they were supposed to "melt" a car. The victim was a 54 Plymouth as I recall. They removed most "dangerous" items from the car - but when the jet flames got to going, burning things started flying thru the air. Probably headliner, insulation or interior materials. Numerous of the crowd bailed off of the bleachers, not knowing if the thing was going to explode or the burning stuff would land on them. Nothing blew up...but it was a fried Plym. Quote
Normspeed Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 I saw him run that one in upstate New York when I was a kid. He was having some clutch troubles but was still the hit of the day. Sad to hear he passed away. One of the greats. I saw him run at Lions drag strip, with the Green Monster with the Allison, I think 16 cylinder air plane motor. Sorry to hear of his passing. bmt47p-15 Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 I think that I remember him doing some pulling with a turbine powered tractor. I was not aware of the land speed record. You never forget a name like Art Arfons once you here it. He will be missed. Quote
Normspeed Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 Other Norm;Where in "upstate NY"? Been so long and I was so young, I don't remember the name of the dragstrip. Went up there with my oldest brother. I'd remember the name if I heard it though. Quote

Olddaddy Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 My fascination with Bonneville started with the Green Monster. I met Art Arfons at our local drag strip, really a great man, a gentleman in a tough sport. Quote
