Hi all!

so, i wanted to replace the king pins on my 1951 coronet. i found a NOS set that supposedly had all the parts, for both sides. it came with 2 pins, 4 bushings, shims, grease caps, etc... i removed the old needle bearing because the manual said "steering knuckle bearing/bushing" so i figured, ok, these bearings can be replaced by bushings. i knocked out the old bearing a little too enthousiastic (i wrecked it), and then noticed the size is way different than the supplied bushings... did i get hussled? why did i get 4 equal bushings instead of 2 bearings and 2 bushings? is there a source for these bearings? can't seem to find them anywhere... help!

You can find them on ebay, they are out of production. Torrington NB-15OH (oil hole) should be the right size.

I could be wrong but i've always thought that the Torrington bearing kingpins "bushings" were actually for the larger DeSoto/Chrysler stub axles and that the Dodge/Plymouth size was the bronze(?) bushings........but could be wrong.......andyd

There are some aftermarket king pin kits with an oversize bushing to replace the upper bearing.

It could be this car has 11 or 12 inch brakes. A swap that I have done on my Plymouths ( I’ve only done the 12 Chrysler Windsor brakes so I don’t know about the 11s ).

It shouldn’t be a problem changing to the bushings.

Honestly the needle bearings I have dealt with were a pain in the neck. Brand new ones in a box ( decades old ) were so stuck they spend a lot of time in the heated ultrasonic cleaner to get them loose. I can imagine what old installed ones could be like. Plymouths are light and really won’t benefit much by using the needle bearings. There’s a reason they aren’t made anymore.

i was able to find a new old stock kit on ebay with the torrington needle bearings.   It is a well built bearing packed with the original grease and wrapped in original packaging.    Hopefully there are alternatives available for that bearing bore.   My car is a 1940 plymouth p9 (Canada built).

Chrysler #681378

Made in USA under a British patent.
