Noonan Posted February 26 Report Posted February 26 (edited) I'm looking at purchasing trunk lid rubber seal for my 1940. Looking at steele rubber products. They have a few different options for my 1940 coupe through application. I made a call to steele rubber to inquire as to which option would he best for my car, it wasn't much help. So I'm curious to know if anyone has purchased trunk lid rubber from steele rubber, if so which type did you select and what are your thoughts? Edited February 26 by Noonan Quote
clarkede Posted February 26 Report Posted February 26 I bought a complete weatherstripping kit this past year from Andy Bernbaum Auto parts. I'm in the middle of my restoration and I've installed several of the weatherstripping pieces from the kit so far including the trunk, cowl, front vent windows, and rear vent windows - and all have fit perfectly. If you're not interested in the whole kit, it looks like they sell just the trunk weatherstripping. Here's a couple pictures where I was laying the weatherstripping into the channel before using the 3M Weatherstripping adhesive to secure it. You can see where i haven't cut the material to size at the bottom until the last moment. ** No matter where you get your weatherstripping, make sure you use the 3M Weatherstripping Adhesive. If you haven't attached weatherstripping before, I'd recommend watching a video or two on how to do it without making a mess. 1 Quote
andyd Posted February 26 Report Posted February 26 I would go to Bernbaums, have delt with them for over 40 years and always a satisfactory result.........Steele Rubber were a PITA, I ordered the correct vent rubber from their catalog and they sent a thing that would not fit and refused to consider that they had made a mistake......so I badmouth them as much as I can........lol............go to Bernbaums............andyd 1 Quote
Sniper Posted February 26 Report Posted February 26 That's 3M weather stripping glue is the real deal however, you need to make sure that you have that rubber exactly where you want it before you touch it down because it will stick right there. 1 Quote
Noonan Posted February 27 Author Report Posted February 27 Ok sweet ! Thank you for the info on the rubber and install tips ! I was kind of leaning toward the rubber seal that is applied to the body side with the 3m sticky backer that you just pull the paper off and install. I have to do some more research and thinking on this. Im not assembling this car with finish paint so i'm not sure how permanent the heavy duty 3m glue is going to be in the future if i tear down the car for paint prep. O boy I've had poor experiences with the obviously preferred supplier that has left me quite sour as well, luck of the draw i suppose. I am leaning toward giving steele rubber the benifit of the doubt. I have recently ordered molded windshield, quarter and rear window glass rubber for the coupe from steele. We will see when it arrives if it ends up fitting a vw beetle Definitely going to stay open to options Quote
