Rlopera44 Posted November 26 Report Posted November 26 hello folks i need help with the fluid drive transmission i have taken it apart to see if i can find out what the problem is with shifting it makes a loud noise every time i shift gears but as i get to the top shifter i can't figure out how it comes apart there is that funnel like spring that seems to not be attached to anything at the bottom of the rod. if anyone knows how to do this or can provide explorer view schematics i will appreciate the info by the way there's no synchro's in this transmission Quote

Dave72dt Posted November 26 Report Posted November 26 It appears you're missing a set screw in the middle rail. If you did not remove it, start fishing around the bottom of the trans case for it. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted November 26 Report Posted November 26 What type of noise are you hearing when shifting gears? Grinding, clunking, squealing, etc.? Is this a 3 speed or 4 speed transmission? If it's a 4 speed, then it's likely the spur gear type without any synchronizers. This would then require developing the skill of double clutching your shifts to avoid having the gears grinding every time you shift. Quote
Rlopera44 Posted November 26 Author Report Posted November 26 Thank you for your feedback yes the screw I took out trying to open the top shifter cover. And yes it is a grinding noise and yes it’s a four speed.i mostly want to take the cover apart to see if anything is out of order in there. I imagine that if anyone knows how to change the shifter rod it would help me with taking apart the whole cover. Quote
Dave72dt Posted November 26 Report Posted November 26 There's very little more to see in the top cover than what you see at this point and nothing in there will make grinding noises. Detent balls and springs under the rails might flat spot and springs might collapse, shift lever might wear on the edges when traveling through the neutral gate. You'll be looking for broken or chipped teeth, worn bearings and since it's not a synchronized trans, that by itself is probably the noise. It will take some practice shifting it. Quote
