wagoneer
Can a 1953 b3b starter fit onto a 51 b2b engine? I'd like to convert to the electric solenoid starter?
Plymouthy Adams
if I recall the flywheel tooth count and the starter tooth count did not change till introduction of 12 volt......anyway, this would be the area to investigate.
Robert Harrison
As far as I know there were two sets of teeth on the flywheels as stated above. From memory the common early 6 cylinder used I think it was 146 teeth the later 172. But I am pretty sure most will bolt up its the teeth on the flywheel that is likely your issue. I did have a later big block 6 with the special head (I dont remember what they called it) that had the solenoid style starter it was mated to an automatic. Sorry if that is not a lot of help. I would tell you that the pedal style starter is more reliable though. Bob Harrison
The Oil Soup
I think there is a difference with the flywheel location between a 218 and 230, the flywheel on the 230 sits a little further back so the mounting surface for the starter needs to be milled out about 0.180” to compensate. I think Don had a thread on that.
Plymouthy Adams
starter stayed stock..only machined to match to mix and match of flywheel/crank used int he build.
