Antennae Mounting Hole ???

Hi all, I have the existing hole for the antennae on my 47 Chrysler, I bought an aftermarket antennae from NAPA, but the hole is too small, should I make it bigger or try and find a period correct NOS or used antennae.

How might I make this hole bigger for the mount, the mount requires 1 inch, the hole is 3/4 of an inch, would a dremel and grinding wheel work......................Thanx Fred

A few years back I needed a antenna for one of my newer vehicles PEP Boys had a antenna kit with different adapters to fit different openings. So you may want to look around a little before you adjust the fender opening

I think I would look about fror an antennea that would fit the existing hole..I am thinking that period correct would be one with the little plastic jewel at the tip. If you should have to enlarge the hole, place a washer the correct size and outline with pencil, use a rat-tail file to file to the line..not much chance of a file getting away and damaging an area..

AND

If you still have the trim on the car, place tape so no filing will collect between the body and the trim..results would be rust stained painted trim and paint...

Fred, where is your antenna mounting hole.....on the cowl like this??

This antenna is not original, but is very close to it.

Here's the one on the 54 Plymouth - it IS an original.

Here's the antenna shown in my Plym parts manual.

Have seen some old mopars with antenna on the fender rather than the cowl.

You can buy aftermarket antennas with different types of bases designed to fit many applications. Just depends upon what you happen to need. These came from swap meets for maybe $5 each.

Hi Bob, yes that is more or less where the mounting hole is located. I should not have open the package from NAPA, they won't take the antennae back now, it was only $5.00, will probably just buy another that fits..........Fred

Thanx Tim, think I will just buy one that fits, this one was only $5.00, or I may try the rat tail file trick. I don't have to have an OEM antnennae, it's a driver car anyways.....Fred

I bought a power antenna for my '50, from NAPA. It came with several different escutcheons to fit various cars, and none of them really fit the contour of my fender. So I used a round file and shaped the bottom of one of the escutcheons to fit. If I remember correctly, I had to use a file to enlarge the hole in the fender slightly for the new antenna to fit.

Looks nearly stock, and goes all the way down unlike the original that was on the car when I bought it.

Fred-

I never get tired of the view...

That said, only one of the shots I posted with the antenna are in Idaho... The first is north of Ketchum, ID, where I live, and then the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, Southern Utah, and somewhere near the Colorado/New Mexico border. I get around... :D
