55 Fargo Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 Hi all, decided since the Canuck dollar is still worth a few pennies more than the Greenback, that it might be time to order a new gas tank. Was thinking of going with Tanks Inc, they make a steel rolled, with baffles for 1941 to 1948 Plymouths, the sending unit hole is in the right spot, so is the filler neck. They are $250.00 for steel and $350.00 for stainless steel. I was also thinking of going with a universal poly tank, or maybe with a tank from some other supplier. Do the straps usually come with the new tanks, or can I use the old ones. What have some of you guys used, has anyone used the 41 to 48 Plymouth tank from Tanks Inc, would it also fit in a 47 Chrysler, they should be the same for 6 cyl engines, should they not...............Fred Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 Fred, the poly tanks are also about $215, so I'd go with the Tanks Inc. steel tank. Everything I needed except the sending unit came with my poly tank, including the straps. Even if the straps don't come with it, universal straps are cheap. Quote
55 Fargo Posted November 19, 2007 Author Report Posted November 19, 2007 Thanx Norm, this might be the right way to go..........Fred Quote
martybose Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 If the Tanks Inc. has the proper filling pipe, I would certainly go that way. I used a poly tank that I got from Ply-Do many years ago, and getting the fuel filler to work was a royal pain. It is still difficult to get it to fill completely. Marty Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 Marty is right on the filler tube for the poly tanks. Took me several attempts to get that hooked up, using different methods. Finally got it though. Marty, mine fills up all the way. Had to use a combination of muffler pipe fittings and hose to make it work. Quote
55 Fargo Posted November 19, 2007 Author Report Posted November 19, 2007 Just go off the phone with Tanks.Inc, they say the tank is made for the 1941 to 1948 Plymouth or Dodge, the filler neck and sending unit hole are in the correct locations. It should also fit the 1941 to 1948 Chrysler and even Desoto 6 cyl cars, if not I will make it fit. It supposed to be a 15 or 16 gallon tank. Cost $250 plus shipping Quote
Young Ed Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 Wish I had known of them before. Like 3 years ago I spent more then that getting my old tank fixed! Quote
55 Fargo Posted November 19, 2007 Author Report Posted November 19, 2007 Ed and they are right in your neighbourhood, like about 45 minutes out of the Twin Cities, at least I think, they may even be closer. Do you think, if it fits the P15 or D24, it should also fit a 47 Chrysler. As I am writing this, Tanks.inc just phoned, I went ahead with the order, this tank is made in Taiwan, hope I am not making a mistake on getting this tank, will find out, and hopefully not the hard way..............Fred Quote
Young Ed Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 There is a place I think in Zimmerman MN that has tanks. If thats the same place we've gotten a few from them and they were perfect. We did tanks in a 63 falcon and then the falcons replacement the 63 valiant. Next year dads 64 sport fury will be getting one. Quote
55 Fargo Posted November 19, 2007 Author Report Posted November 19, 2007 Hi Ed, it's in Clearwater, I 94, just past Monticello, and just before St. Cloud. Does this place sound familiar. Quote
Young Ed Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 I've never been there I'd have to ask Dad. I gotta think its the same place though. Quote

It fills okay, except that it shuts off the filler nozzles, so I have to stand there and fiddle with it to get it full. Marty Quote
Young Ed Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 Depending on the filling station my stock pipe and gastank p15 has the same issue. And if you think thats bad try filling a 53-54 ply. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 Marty, like you and Ed mentioned I do have to fill the tank slow or the nozzle kicks off. If I try to fill it fast I only get about 5 gallons before it kicks off. I only wish that Tanks Inc. or Rock Valley had been making gas tanks when I bought my poly tank. Rock Valley is a little steep, but Tanks Inc. price is about the same price as I paid for the poly tank. Quote
Young Ed Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 Ok I asked him and he said the place is by Isanti MN. Looked on a map and Isanti and clearwater aren't that far apart. So I bet its the same place. Pretty sure these tanks are a new product so I don't think I missed out too much on my car when I got mine redone. Quote
Dennis_MN Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 Looks like the address is just up the freeway from Monticello Never noticed it though.. http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=page/page_cd=contact/contact.htm Quote
