50 coupe
Can anyone chime in and let me know if this will be enough clearance between the oil pan and this steering member? Looks like 2 inches with steering wheel turned all the way to the left. This is a 1950 Ply. business coupe and I am trying to fit in a 383 Chrysler engine with Torqueflite transmission. The car is off the ground with the frame up on jackstands, and no tires so the suspension is not compressed.
Sniper
That end of the tie rod assembly barely moves vertically, it is constrained by the pitman arm. Pull the coil springs and you can cycle the suspension all you need to sort it out. But I think you are ok.
50 coupe
That is kinda what I thought looking at it. Remind me again what is involved in pulling the coil springs? I did it several years ago when I replaced the king pins but don't recall but I will check my manual. I think something like unbolt the top of the steering knuckle support and shock, support the lower control arm with a hydraulic jack and ease it down to unload the spring???? Sniper
Not sure if a coil spring compressor will be useful here, I doubt it. Here's the FSM instructions

andyd
Simply put you support the car frame with a couple of jackstands..........remove the wheel/tyre then place a jack firmly under the lower A arm as far out towards the brake drum then undo the lower outer bush pin at the outer spindle/A arm junction then CAREFULLY lower the jack under the A arm until the arm swings clear with the coil spring now coming loose.........be careful as it, the coil spring may still have some residual compression and try to vacate the premises .................the lower mount for the sway bar will also need to be undone as it attaches to the lower A arm...........its not a difficult job just one that you need to exhibit care and awarenes when doing it.........andyd
Dartgame
If it does touch, you might consider a truck oil pan, in which the sump is at the back of the engine vs the center.
