Rodney_Hamon Posted June 10, 2023 Report Posted June 10, 2023 3 rubber directions here: first I am trying to save the original front bumper bracket grommets by gluing them and letting them dry in the vise. Then I fill the cracks in and finally will touch up the black with a little pigment. Haven’t decided if I should use spray paint, India ink, or shoe polish. Next I have a slowly disintegrating rubber gasket around the rear glass that is melting. I just brushed on some magnesium carbonate to stabilize it. I can then lightly damp sponge it off so it won’t be so sticky. I could have used talc as well and maybe I might brush that on also. It reminds me of polyurethane that has reached its lifespan. Lastly and this is the question: I have no rubber left for the interior of my ‘36 truck. Should I start going to all the vendors and see what’s available and piecemeal or should I buck up and go with one as shipping will drive the cost up alas. Quote
Solution Rodney_Hamon Posted June 14, 2023 Author Solution Report Posted June 14, 2023 I ordered a catalog from Steele 2 days ago so that will help my search for seals and grommets and a vent lever knob etc. Choices to choose from will be Steele, AB, Roberts, Kanter doesn’t do this territory much, and a little web search which moparpro may pop up. Looking at my firewall I noticed a broken spring that is on the gas pedal linkage rod under the floor bd. Damn. No wonder the pedal return seemed soft. phone service is really lousy today. It’s why I rely on hard copy catalog because of the terrible cell reception where I am. Quote
Rodney_Hamon Posted June 15, 2023 Author Report Posted June 15, 2023 While this gas pedal linkage spring is not about rubber, it is next to the area that needs draft seals. I found an old brake spring and tried round one of duplicating the broken spring. A mig spot weld didn’t work so make a new one it is. A bit slack but better than before. I may try again after I search the local ace hardware spring area. On another note, my third try at Napa paint matching is getting closer. I touched up the bottom of the front fenders with rattle can paint where the old bumper bracket pads will go and it is getting better. That is extremely good for me as I have a lot of touch ups to do. Still waiting for that Steele catalog and can hardly wait to spend $$. lol Quote
lostviking Posted June 18, 2023 Report Posted June 18, 2023 Have you tried the usual places, Roberts et cet? Mine is the next generation, but they had all mine. Also, if you are gluing rubber back together, use something called "shoe goo" It's for fixing shoes, but I just repaired a ripped gasket for my garbage disposal. It bonds well and stays flexible. Rodney_Hamon Posted June 18, 2023 Author Report Posted June 18, 2023 Yes to looking at Roberts catalog. I’ve been going into threads as well to see what’s better or just fine and what’s affordable. Yes to I should get some shoe glue as I used to use it on my shoes. Ha. One of the pads I glued broke upon install so I’ll try that next. Today I’m de rusting the bumper and fasteners etc. What better way to spend Father’s Day. Ha 1 Quote
lostviking Posted June 20, 2023 Report Posted June 20, 2023 I love electrolytic rust removal. It's easy and works like a charm. I used it to completely clean up a rusty heater I bought off Ebay. Looked like new when I finished the repaint. Tim Quote
Rodney_Hamon Posted June 20, 2023 Author Report Posted June 20, 2023 I’m a citric acid lover. I love it because I can put chrome safely into the bath without harm Quote
Rodney_Hamon Posted June 26, 2023 Author Report Posted June 26, 2023 Got my Steele catalog and ordered the side mount grommet and a cowl vent knob. The spring is so stout on that vent lever it will bang up against the dash and scratch it so it’s best to get that knob on asap. I was going to order the rear glass gasket but they no longer carry the 3M bedding compound. So I went with the cheaper Roberts rear window rubber as it was 1/3 the cost. I know you get what you pay for but maybe I’ll be surprised. Got interior pads, boot, draft seals, and vent seal. Yep. $337 but this truck has never had it so good. Ha Quote
Rodney_Hamon Posted July 7, 2023 Author Report Posted July 7, 2023 Trimming the pedal draft seals so they fit better by cutting the center hole and removing some from the back. I am using razor blades and a course bastard and rat tail file. You can see before and after modification. I sliced from the bottom so I can slip over the clutch and brake pedals. It looks like I need to really clean and wax the pedals so it can slide easier through the openings. A little adhesive to keep them secure to the floor board will be needed. Also working on the steering post pad as the center hole needs enlarging. That doesn’t need adhesive. I forgot about the gas pedal as that’s a pretty large round hole there. Always something else needed to buy. Quote
Rodney_Hamon Posted July 8, 2023 Author Report Posted July 8, 2023 Used Permatex black trim adhesive to adhere the draft seals and the vent gasket today before the heat shut me down. Next I will fit and trim a cheap Autozone rear suv cargo mat partly inspired by lost Viking recent mat install he did. I also have a firewall felt to fit in. Over 100 in the garage so I’ll have to find cooler times to putz. Quote
lostviking Posted July 10, 2023 Report Posted July 10, 2023 Those sure look like they were intended for your truck. On mine there was daylight all around them. Good idea to trim the center. I'd use Shoe Goo to glue the bottoms back together. Quote
Rodney_Hamon Posted July 14, 2023 Author Report Posted July 14, 2023 I had to carefully cut those inner squares larger in the draft seals so the pedals wouldn’t just lift them off the floor bd. I finally had enough and stopped at that. I figured I would just fill in the open seam with silicone and color it. Shoe glue is a good solution if it comes out of the tube civilized. That black permatex is so stringy that it’s hard to control almost. I don’t remember the bright red type being such a bear aside from if you get it on the paint or skin you are ...(lot of work to clean-delete). I got a nice bead in the vent tray to drop in that seal. I thought that turned out good. In my younger years I never knew a seal was put under that air vent. Ha. Still need some adjustment with the cover. Man, it seems there’s adjustment with a lot of stuff on these era trucks. Kinda amazed. 1 Quote
Rodney_Hamon Posted October 28, 2023 Author Report Posted October 28, 2023 I finally ordered a grommet for the gas pedal rod through the floor bd. My truck/floor bd has never had such luxury. I realize that I need to clean that linkage/rod of all rust and pitting and probably wax it so it slides easily through the opening in the grommet. TLC time for the little stuff Quote
Veemoney Posted October 28, 2023 Report Posted October 28, 2023 You will like that. When I received my truck it did not have one installed and the pedal would tend to move sideways and come off the ball. I bought 2 and have one on the shelf. Quote
Rodney_Hamon Posted October 31, 2023 Author Report Posted October 31, 2023 You know, when I had my B-1b the clutch/brake pedals would slam the floor bd. When I got the ‘36 it was the same and had more Swiss cheese open holes and what not. I finally am getting wiser and it sure helps that there are more vendors now that sell parts that are easier to find. Even the web. Back in the 70’s for me it was just the WPC News issue with the parts for sale. Maybe Hemmings or JC Whitney. Ha. Ok. I was just doing fine cleaning inside the cab when I decided to start the engine...just to circulate a little coolant before the cold night. Engine wouldn’t start. Something familiar though. I had to pull the choke out and pour a little gas dn the carb. Not good form. I pulled the top of the carb off and the bowl is empty and have a sticky needle. 2 times I did this. Ok. I pulled the carb off and started to take it apart...ugh...green goo. It looked like algae water from an abandoned fish aquarium. Triple ugh. I have to drain the gas tank again and etc etc. It’s time to search out a gas station that sells ethanol free gas and a recycler for old gas. Another detour from putting the new rubber in the cab.
