Dave72dt Posted March 9, 2023 Report Posted March 9, 2023 It has to be attached to work. You're missing a connection. It may not be a wire. It may be the field winding itself. There would have been no reason for a second brush if it wasn't meant to be hooked to something. At this point all you have is a belt tensioner. Take a pic of the inside of the gen case opposite of the one posted earlier. It's been decades since I've had an Autolite gen apart. They're set up a bit different than the common and more popular Delco and are polarized differently as well. 1 Quote
OUTFXD Posted March 9, 2023 Author Report Posted March 9, 2023 Quick question. the "Battery" (or bat) terminal is just to switched power isnt it? Is it possible that the janky wiring from the ignition switch is preventing the voltage regulator from "Turning on"? Quote
Sam Buchanan Posted March 9, 2023 Report Posted March 9, 2023 Turn on the switch and see if you have 6v at the BAT terminal. 1 Quote
Dave72dt Posted March 9, 2023 Report Posted March 9, 2023 As my memory comes back to me, I think you'll find a countersunk hole in the gen case under the protective band. I believe the second brush bolts to ground at that point. Earlier in your post you asked about the odd end cap. That is the oil reservoir for a wick lubed bronze bushing. The hole is an over fill. A little flip tab lower and to the right is the filler. What looks like a lube cap on top is a cap for the bore hole for the wick. Gasket needs to be open oin the center. You may find it packed with grease, should be 30 wt oil. 1 Quote
