Johnboy Posted April 10, 2022 Report Posted April 10, 2022 Hi have a couple of questions. I’m replacing the windshield rubber seal. Where should the rubber be joined together. Do I have to install both pieces of glass at same time. Should I use a sealer after windshield is installed. Thank You Quote
Tom Skinner Posted April 15, 2022 Report Posted April 15, 2022 Johnboy, I would think it would join at the Top Center if it is not one continous piece. Also sealer is required for a water tight fit. There usually is instructions on how to to it in a Service Manual, absent that I would You Tube it, for any better tips on how to install rubber around windshields. My 1948 Chrysler had one continous piece Rubber Seals from Steel Rubber (Front and Back Windshields) so I am not entirely sure about one that has ends. By the way I used a clear 3m sealer, it makes less mess and dries clear and cleans up well Tom 1 Quote
Johnboy Posted April 15, 2022 Author Report Posted April 15, 2022 Thanks for the reply Tom. I was looking on utube didn’t find anything on wear to join gasket. Good idea using clear 3m sealer. Bought seal from Andy Bernbaum. One side glass broke taking it out. Just got new glass today. I read to use a thin rope to help seat gasket. Won’t be putting back in for few weeks. Need to get couple of friends to help, it installs from inside. Will post again after I install glass. John Quote
andyd Posted April 15, 2022 Report Posted April 15, 2022 I would not use any silicon sealer but thats just me, the windscreen rubber/body edge is not a great fit at the best of times so I always use some sort of non hardening "mastic" between the rubber & body edge, as for where the ends join, that depends on how good you are in fitting the rubber with the glass inserted into the channel , a piece of thin rope is inserted around the rubber in the "channel" that is between the glass channel and front rubber lip then the whole lot is placed from the rear against the body edge and the ends of the rope pulled towards the front of the car which "lifts" the rubber seal over the body edge and places it in front of that body edge.............hard to explain but its shown in the shop manual..........andyd Quote
Johnboy Posted April 15, 2022 Author Report Posted April 15, 2022 Hi Andyd Thanks for the info. I have put this seal replacement off for a few years. Time to do it so I can take car out in the rain Quote
Johnboy Posted June 13, 2022 Author Report Posted June 13, 2022 Update replaced windshield gasket yesterday took about 2 hours to install. Had a friend help wouldn’t be able to do myself. Trick is to take your time put one side in then did other side and worked slowly back and forth. Used string and soapy water Put gasket splice on bottom in center. Quote
andyd Posted June 13, 2022 Report Posted June 13, 2022 Good to hear you had a successful outcome, it not a difficult job but having an extra pair of hands makes it much easier.......andyd Quote
Sniper Posted June 14, 2022 Report Posted June 14, 2022 Did you run a hose over it to look for leaks? Did you use a sealer/mastic at all? Inquiring minds want to know, lol. 1 Quote
