Drove the 48 in to work on it, only thing changed was it had 3/16 fuel line to carb from pump, I installed 5/16”. Upon cranking it just fills intake with fuel. Sent carb to Canadian carbs for rebuild 480$, installed today, same exact problem. It turns over, no fire at all, then fuel drips from exhaust/muffler connection. Pull carb, mop it out, try again. Same stock fuel pump, new lines, flushed and cleaned tank, glass bowl filter before carb. Is there usually a pool of fuel there, when one looks down the carb (Carter bb single barrel). I drove it in to do frame, brakes etc, so now it’s time to fire it up! Thanks for any insight, I’m in Squamish BC, Canada .

Wonder if the needle seat to the float is stuck?

Ya I wondered too so I pulled the top, it all looked good, moved float and checked needle is free moving. I’ll try firing it tomorrow, see if it’ll start with what’s in the carb, I’ll re direct the line from pump...thx

Go back to a 3/16th line?

Why no fire? You assuming because it's flooded? Have you confirmed it has spark?

Good luck!

Use a remote switch or have someone else help. When you are cranking, does fuel start to pour out of the booster? If so that says 1) Float not set to proper height or 2) way too much fuel pressure. With a totally stock setup, even with the larger line, you shouldn't have more than stock pressure.

If I was a betting man, the float is not set correctly or it has something stuck in it. $480 for a rebuild??? Wow, I'm really in the wrong business. I bought rebuild kits for my WA-1 carbs and they were less than $100 US. Awful lot of labor there.

Edit: Just checked ebay...$20 a kit.

Hello,

installed new points, condenser, cap, rotor, good strong spark confirmed; just cranks but no start. Old buddy suggested ether (quick-start or similar) , saying as it’s winter, freezing cold outside (truck in covered, open garage) the fuel isn’t able to vaporize so it may need ether to fire. I’ll try that tomorrow after work (roofing).
Ya I know I paid heavy for the rebuild, the fuel intake threads were stripped, I didn’t want to helicoil it, that was my main concern, and never done a carb kit, didn’t have confidence I’d get it right, this thing been sitting two plus years since I drove it in for a quick clean up..!!

thx, appreciate the help and support, d.

Sorry LostViking, no fuel isn’t pouring in, only when throttled it shoots  in from the jet; I’ll keep at it, let ya know when I get it running

Is the choke functional? Get it cleaned out (no pool), set the choke stop to get it on a high idle....don't pump it at all, then try it. Sounds like it might just be flooding due to the cold and too many pumps. If you do get it fired, I hope you have a functioning heat riser flapper. I wouldn't think it has anything to do with the initial firing, but make sure it moves or it will still be cold blooded and hard to keep running.

Good luck. Def try the ether.

Pull the plugs and give each cylinder a shot of oil, spin it over and replace plugs. The cylinders have been washed by excessive flooding. Before you pump the throttle, try starting. If it doesn’t respond, give it one pump and try again. All my engines need a pump or two and partial choke to run at start up, and I set the float slightly lower than specs. It’s supposed to get -19 degrees tonight in my neck of the woods. I would plug in the tank heater a couple hours before starting if I needed my truck. A warm engine fires right up. Rick D.  Oh yeah, keep on truckin, right Brent?
