Stevenlesser Posted January 11, 2022 Report Posted January 11, 2022 Hi I’m going to try to install a 700r4 into my 51 Chrysler Windsor with L head 230 inline 6 spitfire . Replacing tiptoe 2soeed to create commuter . Hoping to tap community for advice per any difficult spots in process . Of note ; have Wilcap adaptor best trans choice was per Wilcap reputable quality rebuild done questions am already committed to this one as I’ve payed for parts 1) can I mate adaptor and trans with engine in place or do I have to tip it out or remove it ?and if I have to tip ,will the head or exhaust manifold bash into already close quarters firewall? will adaptor plate fit and not hit firewall ? 2) will I have to tunnel the floorboard hump to fit her in ? 3) looking for pictures of rear support solution , reposition existing support be cutting or grinding off and sliding back ? Adapt one from different vehicle ? ( I have one for that trans going into old Chevy p/u Wilcap guy offered to send pics but didn’t although I’ve asked x4 Hope to get guidance from someone who’s done it thanks ! Quote
Sniper Posted January 11, 2022 Report Posted January 11, 2022 I see a couple of issues you don't mention. The stock engine mount is a single point in the front. The stock trans mounts, for the original trans, has two mounts making the combination of the three a triangle. The 700R4 uses a single mount so you will lose the triangle and also lose the ability to control the engine torquing over. You will need to address that. That engine and trans will be swinging around like a hammock otherwise. Some kind of torque strap might work. I can't remember if the Wildcap adapter had any sort of mount option. Next issue is the parking brake. You won't have one anymore when you pull the original trans. In Texas, that is an inspection item and it will fail without one assuming you don't have antique plates and being that you want to use it as a commuter it shouldn't be running antique plates. I seriously doubt the 700r4 will mate up to the engine with the stock trans cross member still in place. You will need to fab your own or adapt one of those universal, i.e. fits nothing, trans cross members. I'd suggest making it removable. If you want to know if the adapter will cause firewall issues, measure the thickness of the adapter and subtract that amount from the clearance you have right now. As for the rest, can't really help I think you may be Columbus here, discovering what's there, lol. Quote
Adam H P15 D30 Posted January 11, 2022 Report Posted January 11, 2022 You may have to cut your floor, only way to be sure is to install it and see. I would use a 2004R, smaller and takes less HP to run. I've purchased from Bowtie Overdrive in LA California with great results. Make sure to get the TV cable adjustment and pull ratio correct!! There are various carb adaptors for this. As Sniper said, you will have to fabricate bellhousing side mounts and a rear crossmember for the Chevy trans mount after you cut out the original mount. Bryan Posted January 11, 2022 Report Posted January 11, 2022 Concerning brakes seems like it would be easy to adapt a modern cable system to the rear drums. When I took my Dakota apart it was pretty simple. Looks like a cable pulling rear shoes back in each wheel. Quote
Sniper Posted January 11, 2022 Report Posted January 11, 2022 You have to have an parking brake setup in the rear drums to do that, something the stock rear brakes do not have. Quote

I know that but just that aspect of it wouldn't be hard. The other part with the transmission I'll stay out of. Quote
Stevenlesser Posted January 12, 2022 Author Report Posted January 12, 2022 Hi good answers !,thanks I put a Ford rear diff on the car for my first attempt to commuter-ify the car so I got a lokar universal dash pull brake cable set : bingo im already committed to the 709r4 cause I bought one , better or worse / sickness and health the wilcap guy said make a support for the back of the trans or it’ll torque the rear support kit for a 58’Chevy pu 700r4 conversion project looks good is 3” to narrow for Mopar frame rails but 11/2” spacers on each side will fix or the stock crossmember is riveted on so after the trans is on Maby I could grind out the rivets and use it over by sliding it back that was smart thinking for the firewall + adaptor measuring trick !! if the exhaust manifold hits , reds headers makes a spitfire set I’ve put on a plymmie that had straight down pipes Quote
