47 Plymouth Right Side Tie Rod Sleeve.

Recommended Posts

Laying under my 47 Plymouth a couple of weeks ago trying to adjust my toe setting and noticed the long sleeve that connects the right inner and outer tie rods has a bend in it. I don't think it's supposed to be like that. I've looked around a bit but can't find one. Does anyone know a supplier that has these? Thanks in advance.

Nope......supposed to be straight............I've made tie rods from cold drawn seamless tubing, using, from memory 11/16th taps.........whether LHD or RHD the tierods should be the same from 1940 to 48 if that helps at all........I've probably got one somewhere but I'm in Australia.......how bent is it and whats the steering been like with it bent?......andyd

Nope. It's supposed to be straight.

Over the years, I've seen all manner of bends and twists in tie rod ends, but the adjusters are always either straight or damaged.  I've never seen one that was bent by design.

You might find a used one.  I know of one 1947 DeSoto in a parts yard if you want to DM me for that information.  Or you can use https://car-part.com and/or https://www.hollanderparts.com/used-auto-parts/1947/plymouth.   Both of those are like "junk yard search engines."  They will give you listings of different parts yards/recyclers who have (or at one time had) various donor cars and parts.  Many of the yards listed don't keep their inventory up to date on those sites, though.

SpeedWay Motors will make a custom one  for you.  You might give them a call.  The web page about it is https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speedway-11-16-Inch-Raw-Tie-Rod-Drag-Link-Tubing,26711.html

And if you want to do it yourself, they also sell some nice steel ends with 11/16-18 threads (lh and rh as a pair) that you can weld to a piece of 1 inch ID tubing (1-1/4" 11 gauge tubing, or for heavier duty, 1-3/8" 7 gauge tubing).  Or they sell the taps if you want to tap directly into a piece of 5/8" ID seemless (DOM) tubing.
