Dodgefran Posted September 29, 2021 Report Posted September 29, 2021 I am not able to use the original L6 engine in my 38 Dodge Humpback Panel truck RC. I'm interested in finding out what you all used as an upgrade substitute from 70's and up engine and automatic transmission combo. I'm not sure what I really want to do so your info is of value to me. Thanks for your help. Quote
wayfarer Posted October 2, 2021 Report Posted October 2, 2021 There have been a variety of engine/trans swaps but the LA series is probably the leader. There are also plenty of other Mopar combos that are viable depending on your comfort level with electronics/computers. The 4.7 , although now 'old', is a decent engine, sorta compact, and makes plenty of power; the 3.7 v6 is compact and reasonably powerful; the 3.9 v6 is simply a 'short' 318 so it has history. If you cannot tolerate modern computer stuff then stay with 318-340-360. The Magnum will be the latest incarnation of the LA line. Quote
48Dodger Posted October 4, 2021 Report Posted October 4, 2021 (edited) The 318-360 LA Engine is "to wide". Cutting windows in the hood covers works or eliminating the side covers all together. Why not the L6? Just curious. 48D This is a 331 Hemi ....but you get the idea. Pic taken at the 12 Annual Clements Tailgate BBQ. Edited October 5, 2021 by 48Dodger 1 Quote
lostviking Posted October 5, 2021 Report Posted October 5, 2021 That picture of a Hemi is not a very good example. The Hemi is wide and the heads are huge. There are LOTS of pictures of V8 swapped 1941-1947 Dodge trucks online, and not one of them has any trouble keeping the V8 under the hood. I see a few with Gen III Hemi's also, still have the hoods closed and uncut. There are several on this site, frame swapped or not. It fits under the hood, but the firewall may need to be cut. Quote
48Dodger Posted October 5, 2021 Report Posted October 5, 2021 1938 is narrower than 39-47 models. LA motors are 24 inches vs 1st Gen Hemi motors at 29.5 inches....just my offering, he didn't say which V8....all come with their problems. 48D Quote
lostviking Posted October 6, 2021 Report Posted October 6, 2021 My bad. I'm following too many threads...I didn't see the year when I made that comment. 1 Quote
