Theturtle
I have done a frame-off, clean up, engine rebuild and am into reassembly. Have decided to keep original paint and touch up the bad spots. So no glamour here. It will be my around town driver. Original wheels are off to be cleaned, blasted, painted. Looking for low cost Blackwall tires. Thinking of 205/75/R15 from Discount Tire. Has anyone had success with this size on a car like mine, or do you have other suggestions? BobT-47P15
Some folks feel the 205 is a bit on the small side and 225 some on the big side...so the 215 fills the fender openings and is the best fit. I run 215/75r/15 on my 1947 P15.
soth122003
I bought a set of Hankook Optima's 205/75/15 for my P15 from Wal-Mart (for about $240.00 I think). I had also wanted to try bead balancing, but that was a little pricey. What I did instead was I bought 2 bottles of Air soft BB's, measured out 4 ounces per wheel and put them in. That was over 7 years ago and the tires are still good and the car tracks straight as an arrow. I also like the look of the tires on this car. I just want to lower the front end about 2-3 inches and I think it will look great.
Theturtle
Thanks, Bob and Soth for the replies. Good to hear that the size will work. I have decided to go with the 205 size. Both of your cars look great! Still a long way to go with mine. Rewiring starting next week.
soth122003
Hey Turtle, When you're done re-wiring yours, come down and do mine. LOL Joe Lee
greg g
The 205s will put your speedometer about 10 mph off. When showing 55 vehicle seed. Will be 45 plus or minus a couple. I had a set of 205s on my car but then mounted 225 on the rear speedo indicates three mph faster than GPS reading. I did change my wheels to 15 x 5 after market. 225s are a bit much for the stock rims.
Theturtle
Greg, thanks for the comment and the picture. Your's is the look I am going for - black car, black wheels, hub caps and beauty rings, no right side mirror - but 4 years newer fastback instead of coupe. Sad to say mine will not be so nice. For now, I am going to make do with the original paint with lots of touch-ups. I'm hoping the 205s will be about right. I think the 1950 P19 Deluxe used 640/15 tires and had a lower (numeric) rear-end ratio than the Special Deluxe, which used 670/15s to get the same final gearing. I'm seeing a 27" wheel diameter specs on both the 640 and 205. Time will tell.
greg g
You might be ok with the 205s then, they usually run about 28 inches mounted diameter. My wheels are wheelvintique model 20 smoothies. They are fitted with a dual diameter lug pattern so they can be mounted on Mopar Ford or gm lug pattern. When aligned for the Mopar pattern, one of the gm holes indexes over the aligning pin. If you should go after market or later Mopar steel wheels, make sure the backspace measurement is 4 inches or less. Any more and rear tires can rub on the springs. If you look real close my wheels are dark wild cherry. Baby moons used as wheels lack stock hub cap retaining clips. So if you park the Volvo next to the Plymouth can you tell the difference in the dark? Didha know your Volvo rims will fit on your Plymouth and Visa versa? We had a few Volvo's in our fleet over the years, a 69 122s (Olaf the slow) a 66 122s (Olaf the reluctant) and a 76 940 turbo wagon (Moby Brick) and a couple of parts cars, Olaf the Expendables 1 and 2.
