38plymouth Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 One of my car buddies just found an old timer that is supposed to have a shop full of old cars and parts. He spoke with him on the phone about chevy parts and the guy told him he had all kinds of stuff in the shop and he would call him when it was ok to come by and look for what he needs. I'm planning to go with him so I can at least check out the cars and parts. I would like to pick up an overdrive trans. some day for my 38 plymouth and I figured while I was there maybe I might get lucky. What year mopars would have an overdrive and is there an easy way to tell if the trans. is really an overdrive? Will one bolt right in to my plymouth? I thought I read somewhere once that it won't fit tthru the frame or something. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 What you are looking for is probably an earlier type OD. There are some strictly mechanical floor shift ODs. A guy in our POC chapter put one in his 39 coupe. It came out of a mid 30s desoto I think. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 The newer OD's, starting in Plymouths around 1952, should somewhere on the housing say R10, which is the Borg Warner model.....and will have a couple solenoid type things sticking out on the side. I'm thinking the older model may be an R7. Quote

It apperently is the same size as the former transmission that was on the '55 Ply engine I had previously. The mechanic told me that the drive shaft won't have to be altered. So that is good news there. Quote
builtfercomfort Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 I think the earlier overdrives went from 1934 to 1940 or 41. My 39 Chrysler has one (and I'm thinking of putting something more modern in for the driveline, so maybe we should talk :-) (I'm off to the UK tomorrow and may have limited connectivity for a week or so.) 38plymouth Posted September 21, 2007 Author Report Posted September 21, 2007 I'm figuring it's a long shot that the guy might even have one, but I figure since I'm there I might as well look. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 Yep, I'd definitely go look. You just never know what may be lurking there. Quote
55 Fargo Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 On the R10, what is the ratio reduction in OD, maybe I should start looking around the prairie Provinces in Canada for one. Could go nice with my current diff, or would be nice with a 3.54, in od you could cruise all day at 70 mph............Fred Quote
