Norm's Coupe
Bill, I have the figure 8 style on my doors. Have the round one on my trunk. Mine is a 48. I believe both styles were used depending on the year the car was built. Not sure of the breakdown though.
Captain Neon
My 1946 has the round ones. If the reflector on your taillights are white then use the round ones. As stocks were used up in 1947, they switched from the white reflectors to red and from round key covers to figure-8s. Just like the switch from 16" to 15" wheels. BobT-47P15
The round (dime) ones were replaced by the figure 8's , but don't know what specific date. I was told by a parts dealer that the dime ones bent too easily, and as you can see, the 8s are a lot tougher.
splat1955
hmmmm....upon closer inspection, I do have the figure 8 lock covers...and they are cool!
BobT-47P15
Here's one from ebay......
55 Fargo
Is it possible to have my door and trunk lock re-keyed, do the doors and trunk, share the same key,I don't even have an original ignition switch, I have a later model mopar key and switch to start the engine, would like to get an original type , I do have the starter button...........Fred PS the one on my car is from a 1951 Dodge, would trade this for a 46 to 48 Mopar switch and key, or at least if I could find a switch, I could buy a new key and key cylinder, even my parts car did not have the right ignition switch. Young Ed
So far my car has one of each type lock It came with the figure 8 ones but the parts car I bought had one flat one and one dummy cylinder. I think the parts car was a really early 46 and sold in some state that still didn't have drivers side locks.
Norm's Coupe
Fred, my trunk lock has a different key. Door locks and ignition are the same. Then I have another key for the glove box. Believe it was that way originally.
Don Coatney
I also have 3 keys for my car. Ignition and doors are one key, trunk another, and glove box is a key of its own.
Young Ed
Norm and Don that is factory correct. However the trunk is the same blank and it is possible to only have 2 keys per car.
Don Coatney
Norm and Don that is factory correct. However the trunk is the same blank and it is possible to only have 2 keys per car. Glad I have something factory correct on my car. Should I enter the POC judging for the extra points?
Young Ed
There is only 1 way to get extra points. Otherwise factory correct stuff just keeps you from getting a deduction
Jeff.P_46
If you aren't sure or are confussed about what lock/key to use, just shave the handle/lock sets on the doors and trunk.
Young Ed
Good idea Jeff. Then send your lock sets to me so I can have a matching set!
Norm's Coupe
Glad I have something factory correct on my car. Should I enter the POC judging for the extra points? Don, you have all the points you need for your car, just like I do. That's the ones inside your distributor. I have extra points for my car, but those don't do much for it because they are in the cabinet.
BobT-47P15
Here, courtesy of ebay, are the ignition (octagon) and trunk (oval) keys. Seller says these are brass, rather than the original aluminum. Should make them more durable. And then, it appears the glove box key is round head. Don Coatney
I think my keys are shaped like that but I cant find them.
Young Ed
Don almost in the bottom right there's a key being pointed at by a nail. I have a padlock that uses a key just like that. And 2 keys below that is one with a cross looking piece on it. That would probably open the paper towel holder in most bathrooms
Don Coatney
Don' date=' you have all the points you need for your car, just like I do. That's the ones inside your distributor. I already have you beat Norm as I have twice as many points in my distributor as you do. Here is your losers trophy:D

Here is your losers trophy:D Now that's a trophy I will gladly accept. At least it serves a very useful purpose other than just sitting on a shelf collecting dust. splat1955
Hey Bob, thanks for the pics....those figure 8 covers are pretty cool....gonna have to watch for some of those.
BobT-47P15
My current ignition key is one of these later model Pentastar items. Works perfectly well.....just not the older style. Trunk key is original type.
De Soto Frank
I have always found the trunk key to be a different blank - the key-way is different than the ignition... At least that's been the case with my '41-'48 more-door Sedans... I have the original aluminum keys for my '48 NYer, although he glovebox key is nickeled brass; my '41 De Soto only came with the ignition key - brass-plated steel ( ! ), an aftermarket (Curtis?). Would love to get a key fitted to the trunk lock... but I have no idea how to remove the cylinder w/o a key... Also have the original aluminum keys from my '60 Windsor and from my '61 Belvy... Further trivia - pre-war cars had just one exterior door lock: passenger side front. De Soto Frank
BobT-47P15
Frank.....you might check with mike maker out in Calif.....he has become something of a lock expert.....he might be able to get you a key made if you send the lock to him. Next time I will probably send him whatever I need done, as one local lock shop basically broke my trunk handle lock.
