Hooliganxmotorsports Posted October 17, 2018 Report Posted October 17, 2018 I am soon going to purchase a 1949 Dodge Wayfarer. I need to replace the carburetor and need help selecting the correct one. Can anyone help. I have attached a few photos of the carburetor that is currently on the vehicle. Thanks in advanced. Merle Coggins Posted October 17, 2018 Report Posted October 17, 2018 Why do you need to replace it? Could it just be rebuilt? It looks like a Carter B&B. There is a number on that diagonal rib. Hard to see in your picture, but it looks like DG... Quote
Hooliganxmotorsports Posted October 18, 2018 Author Report Posted October 18, 2018 (edited) Thanks Merle Coggins for the replay. I have not picked the car up yet. My on Gunnery Sgt is holding it for me and he told me that he has tried to rebuild the carburetor but it leaks so I figured just buy a new one so that we can get it running. Are you referring to this highlighted area is where I need to look? What will this number tell me? Thanks in advanced for your help. I am a total newbie!!!!! Dodgeb4ya Posted October 18, 2018 Report Posted October 18, 2018 (edited) Your Gunnery Sgt doesn't know how to rebuild or fix a Wayfarer carb. You could buy a rebuilt Carter Ball and Ball as shown for $200.00 - $300.00 online hoping it's done right... or have a local carb shop if one's left rebuild it for you or better... Do some more searching here on how to rebuild that simple carb by yourself if you have some knowledge and confidence.? Edited October 18, 2018 by Dodgeb4ya Quote
Hooliganxmotorsports Posted October 18, 2018 Author Report Posted October 18, 2018 Thanks Dodgeb4ya, My old gunny is actually an excellent mechanic and he taught me a lot. If he can't fix it, something is definitely wrong with it!!! I will see if he can show me a video of where it is leaking from. Thanks. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted October 18, 2018 Report Posted October 18, 2018 Most likely the needle and seat is leaking or float level too high and flooding the carb.... causing leaking out around the throttle plate and top seam. A sunk float could be a factor too. 1 Quote
Hooliganxmotorsports Posted October 18, 2018 Author Report Posted October 18, 2018 Thanks Dodgeb4ya!!!! Quote
ddesjard Posted October 25, 2018 Report Posted October 25, 2018 (edited) If you're determined to do it yourself (you and your sgt.) then Roberts Motor Parts likely has the rebuild parts you need. 800-231-3180. Just got a kit for my 50 Dodge Coronet carb. It's a Stromberg, but they have Carter stuff, too. Edited October 25, 2018 by ddesjard Quote
