James_Douglas Posted February 2, 2018 Report Posted February 2, 2018 Hi All, Is the rear of the smaller Plymouth-Dodge 230 engine the same as the larger Chrysler-Desoto 251 engine as to bell housing pattern? Do the transmissions bolt right up and can be swapped between them? Thanks, James Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 2, 2018 Report Posted February 2, 2018 My P-15 bell housing was a direct bolt on to my Desoto engine. As you have fluid drive the rear cross member may be out of position for the rear engine mounts. Quote
wayfarer Posted February 2, 2018 Report Posted February 2, 2018 All of the various L6 engines have the same block bolt pattern. Bellhousings will vary in depth and trans bolt pattern as well as rear mount style and location. Quote
James_Douglas Posted February 2, 2018 Author Report Posted February 2, 2018 I may have run across a bell housing and flex plate off of a tug that has a Plymouth engine on it. I want the bell housing and plate to put an automatic in my car. James. Quote
wayfarer Posted February 3, 2018 Report Posted February 3, 2018 Word of caution....the 201-208-218 (23" versions) all have a shorter crank (0.185") than all other L6 engines. Check/measure the donor engine: the face of crank flange to face of block will be either 1" or 1-3/16". Since the L6 was used until the /6 took over in 1960 a TF package is doable. I have heard of airport tugs using the L6 with the later TF with all oem parts. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted February 3, 2018 Report Posted February 3, 2018 Here's a Military Coleman tug 230 automatic adapter and flywheel picture.... 1 1 Quote
wayfarer Posted February 5, 2018 Report Posted February 5, 2018 Not sure which 'automatic' trans that is for......Mopar ring gears are mounted on the torque converter not the flex-plate.... More photos would be nice. Quote
