Fluid drive transmission won't seat

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

I'm finally at the point where I am  installing the transmission back in my 49 Dodge Cornett,  but I cannot seem to get the transmission to seat the last half inch or so.

I had put the fluid drive transmission in once but knocked the throw out bearing off the fork and decided to pull it and try again. Now it stops short. I have the original  three speed that came with the engine and it won't seat either.

Im at a loss, any ideas? I really don't want to pull the motor and install as a unit as I am on jack stands and really don't have the room.

It took me a few hours trying to combine mine to realize that the bolt holes are not concentric on the flywheel.  They are spaced oddly and will only go together 1 way.

You have to get that small end of the trans pilot shaft into the last pilot bushing in the front of the fluid drive coupling.

That will let the trans go the last 1/2".

Been there same place many times.

Mash down on the Clutch Pedal. It should drop right in place

That was going to be my suggestion. The clutch disc likely got slightly out of position along the way. It's close enough to get everything lined up, but off just enough to properly line up that final bushing. If you can depress the clutch pedal slightly, to release the pressure on the clutch disc, as you push the trans in, it will allow things to self align and pop right in that final little bit. Works every time for me.

Merle, that was it. The disk was out of alignment. I have been away from the project for a while but am starting at it again

What was the transmission shaft not aligned with causing it not to go in all the way?
