A '49 Desoto came in to a local scrap yard and I am wondering if the rear end will fit in my B-3-B to make it a little more gas friendly. I would like to be able to just swap third members instead of the whole axle housing if possible.

Thanks

Harvey

The 49 De Soto rear ends were 3.93 or 4.10 gear ratio. Not much for gas savings.

Check the hollender (sp?) interchange manuals but the thrid member from a mid fifty's chrysler six cly car fit into my rear end on my 1948 b-1-b.

The third member fit. I took it a little further and swapped the cases so the 3:54 gears are in the b-1-b case. Helps get down the road.. I'd still like a t-5 OD.

Steve, The Hollender manuals can I get one that would cover my 60 Dodge truck? I noted they have diffrent years for that manual.

Thanks

You certainly can. However in looking through dads the truck coverage is very sketchy

I would still take a look. What tranny does that desoto have? I think what you are looking for is a car with one of the versions of the semi auto. Also who knows whats been put in that car in the last 50 years.

I've heard that any late 40's to early 50's Chrysler with automatic transmission (or Fluid) will work. I think they had ratios of something like 3:56... I'm looking to do the same thing in my B2B.

The only real way to know is to check. And of course they were nice enough to stamp it on the top of the casing where its the hardest to see.

Yeah....ya can't always trust what's stamped on the rear end. I recently sold a 49 Dodge coupe that I installed a 3.55 ring and pinon in. The case is stamped 4.11. I told the new owner but he wasn't too interested so if he sells .....the gear change info will probably not be passed along.

Reg I have the same thing in my coupe. Case is 4.11 with a 3.73 gear set. I didn't want to send Harvey completely off the edge with that possibility.
