Christopher Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 I have a scary sound in the the engine,,kind of a low pitched howel, with a rythem....awhile back I had some dizzy trouble, at first I thought I was carboned up. and the engine would shake when reved up...then discovered the revolving dizzy..replaced that and was running pretty good,,but started to notice a different sound. can't seem to catch it with the listening stick..think I could have loosened up some crank berings???doesn"t sound like a rod.have 115 pds. in all clyinders, and oil pressure is good..anything sound familiar.....Christopher from the high and lonesome... .. greg g Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 Dizzy bushing, genny bearings, waterpump bearing??? One of those pesky harmonic balances delaminating? Quote
Normspeed Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 Maybe coming from the water pump or generator? Does it get louder or go away when you push in the clutch or change rpms? Quote
Christopher Posted July 18, 2007 Author Report Posted July 18, 2007 Its a pretty heavy sound, I know the sound can travel around.Im leaning towards clutch/flywheel, will take off fan belt and check pump and genny though.and get my fair bride to push in clutch so I can check with stick, also will check tranny bolts and bellhousing bolts..just hopin its not the crank..Thanks guys... .. Don Coatney Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 Christopher; Retard your engine timing and try it again. Quote
blueskies Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 I bought one of these to sort out the mystery noise in my engine, and it was very enlightening. I could hear every little tick inside the engine with this thing. Hope you find your noise without having to tear down the whole damn thing like I did! Pete Quote
Normspeed Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 If it seems to be near the back, you might make sure the starter motor isn't running on or anything like that. Pretty far fetched though. Quote
Christopher Posted July 18, 2007 Author Report Posted July 18, 2007 well, its thunder and lightning here today..when it clears up, Ill try the retard timing, but with thought and talking it over with local mechanic friends, I have advise on cam berings to cracked or broken piston.years ago I had a 122 volvo. I heard /felt a change in the engine. had sports car racers listen with a stehascope[not a electric one like petes] the said your imagining it. well next long drive, bingo" a piston skirt broke..Ill check all the easy things first, and I do have a friend with the new type listening device..before I pull the pan.only 8000 on this engine, but when I had the dizzy trouble and the engine was shaking at anything off idle who knows what damage could have occured..I have a good running 251 that may end up in MR. Mike yet..do hate to discard a expensive engine just yet though.any more thoughts would be appreciated..will keep posted Thanks. Christopher. from the thunder and lightning lomesome..... Quote
Tom Skinner Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 Christopher, I bought my second 48 Chrysler Royal in February at the beach in NC. I had to drive it home 300 miles to Charlotte because it ran, I love to drive em and Freight was $800 and would take a month or more to get, and I didn't want the guy (Seller) backing out so I drove it about 250 miles and a funky Whiring Humzzy sound developed when I came to a rest stop along the Interstate. The Water Pump I thought, I was right I got home and first thing bought a water pump at NAPA for $79, put er in no more Whirzzzezums. Try adding some oil in pecocks at the generator front and back don't overdue it. Its probably something simple don't overeact and start rebuilding engines. Breathe. It vill be alright. Tom Quote
Christopher Posted July 19, 2007 Author Report Posted July 19, 2007 Up date Don gets the prize,,after a days work of making spoons,I got back to Mr. Mike. I listened, and listened. then got my nieghbor,[who is the guy]. to stop by and give a listen. we did the pull the wire off trick, no change we looked we listened some more..then Dave said, I would start with the dizzy. now this is a loud scary noise.Thats when the light went on[in my thick german head]Don said retard the timing!!!! Ta Da..noise went away..now this is the thrid dizzy I have had in this car in 5+ years.they have all been old ones I cleaned up and used..I suppose its possible that they were all worn out, But it makes me wonder if the oil pump is a little off some how[new when engine was done 51/2 years ago.]sounds like the same kind of deal Pete had goin on.I have some old ones from the combine motors. maybe have the ace engine machinist in wenatchee.spec one ..any way it looks like the engine is OK. just need to trouble shoot the dizzy/oil pump. need to get him goin to take my best girl for a ride on the high and lonesome.....Anybody got a dizzy for sale or trade..need a IAT 4101. Thanks Christopher... Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Christopher; What you were hearing was spark knock. I had the same issue with my engine. You have corrected your timing and there is no need to do anything else but drive it. Nothing was broken just out of adjustment. Your distributor should be fine. Quote
Christopher Posted July 19, 2007 Author Report Posted July 19, 2007 Later today will put the timing light On. and see where its at. try to find why the timing changed from the last setting. I still think something is goofy, with this distributor, Christopher.... . Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Christopher; When I had this problem the only thing goofy was me. I set the advance too high and suffered the spark knock problem. Like you it scarred the heck out of me thinking I had a deep mechanical problem. I corrected this timing problem when I was over 300 miles from home and my car ran great on the return trip to home and it still runs great today. Quote
