rallyace Posted August 8, 2016 Report Posted August 8, 2016 Pertronix has had a quality issue over the last couple of years. I have had issues with failures on British cars in the past and many friends have had the same issues. It is not uncommon to find a Pertronix bad out of the box or fail ourtright at the least convenient location (my MGB unit failed while I was in 70 MPH traffic on I-81). When they are good, they are great. When they are troublesome you will get stranded. Quote
greg g Posted August 8, 2016 Report Posted August 8, 2016 Keep your points. Buy quality tune up parts, install them properly, and enjoy the reliable performance of a proven, well engineered, and vintage appropriate system. How many time are you going to need to mess with the points on a car that gets driven 3K or fewer miles? I just looked at mine after eight years, and 25K miles, as I had the distributor out to deal with a vacuum advance issue. I did a couple swipes with the points file checked the gap, no adjustment necessary, and put it back in adding a couple drops of oil to the wick. At least I know that they will not suddenly quit working. Quote
nonstop Posted August 9, 2016 Report Posted August 9, 2016 Just did the Pertronix yesterday. Had the car towed home last week as a result of the points going out. I carried 2 spare sets, but did not want to change them on the side of the freeway. So far very happy with the Pertronix, but built a spare breaker plate with points and condensor just in case. I Second buying the quality ignition parts. A month or so ago, a relatively new condensor almost left me stranded. When the points went out last week, the rivets holding the arm to the rubbing block sheared off. As I was doing the conversion, I pulled off the second set of points (dual point set up) and the points looked bad. All parts had less than a thousand miles. They were Autozone (Wells) which I thought were supposed to be okay. I sourced the spare ignition parts from another source. Quote
