James_Douglas Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 Does anyone know if I can pull the steering box out WITHOUT having to pull the steering column and the turn signal wires ? All my books say the same thing and the column has to come with it. I need to replace all the seals and gaskets as the thing is leaking. I have the wind pans off the bottom, so I can drop it down if I don't need the column out. Thanks, James Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 The inner shaft of the steering column is integral with the worm gear..answer..all or none..there have been reports of this getting cut and rewelded..not a recommend fix..even with a good weld, the horn wire hole often suffers some closure...removal of the steering wheel, access panel in floor make removal of the sector a rather bit of a pain for sure. James_Douglas Posted July 13, 2007 Author Report Posted July 13, 2007 I must have not articulated well in my question. Can the steering box AND the worm shaft be removed with the outer steering column left in place ? What I mean is that can you remove the clamp on the bottom of the column and slide the unit out the bottom of the car. James Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 I can say this..I had one out of the car...loosened the clamp and was just going to slide it off..lets just say it didn't..I did not want to damage anything as the sector was to be shipped out of town..so let the entire unit go in one price...It has to come apart as i have seen the exposed shaft..just how involved..not sure..maybe mine was a bit STUCK... Jim Yergin Posted July 14, 2007 Report Posted July 14, 2007 I have removed the box and worm shaft on my '41 P12 without removing the column and gear shifter from the car. I did have to unbolt the column from the bottom of the dash so that it could lie down on the front seat so that I had enough room to slide the box and worm shaft out towards the front of the car. I suppose if the car was up on a lift the box and shaft could be drawn straight down. Jim Yergin Quote
Tony_Urwin Posted July 14, 2007 Report Posted July 14, 2007 Good luck, James. When I replaced the steering gear in my '48 Dodge truck, I couldn't remove the steering gear through the front suspension unless I first removed the pitman arm. I had to remove the floor pan (they come out in the trucks), and take the steering gear out the driver's door. Quote
PatS.... Posted July 14, 2007 Report Posted July 14, 2007 I had a close look at mine and while I'm sure it does come apart, I can't see how without it coming apart into a million bits. Seems more trouble than it's worth. But that's just me. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted July 14, 2007 Report Posted July 14, 2007 I left my pitman arm attached and the only pieces that came out were the box with the worm shaft attached. Not that hard to do and the install went just as easy. Jim Yergin Quote
