If this is the elbow that bolts to the water pump with 2 bolts and has a threaded outlet for the heater,

and connects to the thermostat housing with a 1 " hose,   send me a PM, I can help.

On a related note...If I want to remove the heating unit altogether, is there a specific fitting that would allow me to simply block off this bypass?  There must have been some provision for this on cars that came without factory heaters, but I can't find any reference to it in my service manuals.  Is it a matter of replacing the water pump entirely with a unit that doesn't have a hole for the bypass?

If the elbow you are looking for is the one pictured with the heater hose connected and you don't want a heater, simply remove the threaded elbow and install a correctly sized tapered pipe plug using thread sealant. Also install a correctly sized tapered pipe plug in the back of the head in the hole marked "HEATER".

Ah, easier than I thought....Couldn't see the threads in the elbow from my vantage point!   Thanks Don.

The one from Bernbaum was crap.  The threads are not tapered so it just goes in till the thread bottoms.  Plus it was too long and angled so it would never seal.  I just bought a right angle fitting from summit.

I mailed you an elbow without the heater outlet this morning as per our earlier PM

If you're not concerned about originality, a brass elbow with a barbed fitting works fine.

So now when going to swap meets look for the elbow and also the bypass cast piece.  I like to put a manual shutoff valve at the rear of the head and also on the bypass section of the water pump.

This permits me to shu off the flow of the water at the back of the head and at the water pump. If you ever have to remove the heater then you do not have to drain the radiator, just turn off both shutoff values and then youonly have to drain the water in the two heater hose lines and the fluid that is in the heated coil.

This is just a thought on how someone else handled this situation.  Also you do see shutoff valves witht he tapperd threads at swap meets. I have a couple.
