Greetings from Australia..!!

I have a 1947 Canadian built Dodge Special Deluxe sedan that has been converted to 12 volt except for the windscreen wiper motor. Sadly when I acquired the car the wiring left a lot to be desired. In fact there was no wiring to the wiper motor. Any "sparkies" out there who can advise me what wire goes where.? I have a 12v - 6v reducer ready to go. Any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks..!!

I am not familiar with Canadian built Plodges, but most US built 46-48 Plymouths and Dodges came with vacuum wipers. Some Dodge Customs had electric wipers, but the Deluxe models did not. Are you sure that your car has an electric wiper motor? Look for a vacuum line coming off of the intake manifold an going into the firewall.

12 volt pos. or neg. ground?

 

Either way I would hook up to  the Hot side ( non grounded bat. connection) with a jumper wire and quickly touch the wires 2or 3? . Any movement? Need to first find out if the motor is already grounded though the mount  or which is the grounding wire to the motor. A volt meter in line is a better choice if available. . 2 wires = one speed wiper, 3 wires= 2 speed wipers.

 

Just the basic starting points will help decide the correct wiring, ;)

D 25 Dodges had vacuum wipers, same as Plymouth.

My Canadian 40 Plymouth has electric wipers. I'm not sure if they're the same but I have the unit out right now and will take a picture it may help with the wiring.

Thank you everyone. Mr Plyrod I have the same wiper motor as the one pictured. i noticed that there is one wire not connected to anything from the switch. Is that the earth.? And how is the motor earthed.? Thanks very much for the photo and the wiring diagram? It is going to be a great help. Cheers everyone.... Bob

The lug with no wire on it on the motor I believe is a mount. The wire on the switch not going anywhere goes to the ignition for power.

Thank you again Mr Plyrod. I felt rather stupid after asking about the loose wire remembering after I wrote that there had to be power coming from somewhere..!! I think I'll use the extra lug on the motor as a secondary ground. I now have the motor at a local shop where the guy specialises in rewinding electric motors. Don't see too many people doing that nowadays. He's done a couple of jobs for me previously and he does great work. All the very best. Cheers, Bob

If you're going 12 VDC anyway, you might ask him if he can rewind the 6 VDC motor for 12 volts.  I don't know if it is possible.  (I did a rewind on a 120 VAC motor once years ago - I had a friend who told me what wire to use, & showed me how to do it, and he also had the schellac to coat the windings with.)
