Allmyjunk Posted March 18, 2016 Report Posted March 18, 2016 So after getting the car Legal and acutely driving it today my voltage regulator stayed pegged (amp meater stayed +35) above an idle so I picked up a new one. Now it isn't chargeing at all with the lights on it won't come up of -20 or close to I have tried polerizeing but still nothing could the new one be bad or am I missing something? I will say it was nice to get to drive it on a beautiful spring day Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 18, 2016 Report Posted March 18, 2016 Do you have a service manual? If not get one. Read up on charging problems and troubleshoot per the instructions. Too many variables for anyone here to do your troubleshooting for you. Learn how the system works and adjust accordingly. Quote
Allmyjunk Posted March 18, 2016 Author Report Posted March 18, 2016 I have a service manual it's on my wife's computer she is not here right now. I just thought seone smart individual on this forum might have had a similar issue, sorry for trying to use this forum for some help. I will take a gander at the manual when she gets home thank you Mr. Coatney for your help 1 Quote
dpollo Posted March 18, 2016 Report Posted March 18, 2016 The BEST regulators were the original Autolites that came with the cars when they were new. Your original may just be reacting to a very low battery. In any event, it is best not to mess with the internals too much but there would be no harm in taking the cover off and checking to see that the current and voltage controls are not sticking. The cut out is the element nearest the terminal marked BATT. It seems to be working . Draw some VERY fine sandpaper through the other contacts just to clean them ( don't jump on me, guys, I know what the manual says) filing these points is for an expert. The new unit sounds like a Dud so take it back for a replacement or a refund . Attempting to adjust it will void any warrantee. It was a great day here on Vancouver Island. (did not get the old car(s) out though Shame on me. Quote
desoto1939 Posted March 19, 2016 Report Posted March 19, 2016 maybe a point is stuck closed. open the case to see what is happening see if you can open an close the point by hand. If the reg has been sitting it could be bad. Not to sure how to tell you how to test it but a good mechanic should beable to tell you. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted March 19, 2016 Report Posted March 19, 2016 Todays replacement voltage regulators.......1/10th the quality of the original Autolite VR's. I won't use them. Quote
Allmyjunk Posted March 19, 2016 Author Report Posted March 19, 2016 I went ahead and cleaned the fender with a wire brush (ground maybe) that didn't work so put the old one back on polarized it and it seems to be working at least better than it was. The battery is a brand new optima and it's full 6.3 volts so Im calling today a victory. What a beautiful day though put right at 100 miles on the car today a great time this car has been off the road sence 1986 Quote
