Dartgame Posted September 2, 2015 Report Posted September 2, 2015 I am interested in buying a spare distributor and was curious about fitment between the small 218/230 flat sixes and the larger desoto and chrysler flat sixes. For instance, can you swap a big six dizzy into a small block six ? Quote
Niel Hoback Posted September 2, 2015 Report Posted September 2, 2015 No, the shaft is longer on the long block 6's. Quote
Dartgame Posted September 2, 2015 Author Report Posted September 2, 2015 Aha !! thats what I needed to know. Now for the next question. I had my brother get me a spare IAT distibutor for my 52 ply from a junkyard 53 ply with an IAT. My intention is to convert the 53 dizzy to a pertronix ignition, and keep the 52 as a spare with points. The odd thing about this 53 distributor is that instead of a hole through the side for the primary lead, it has a large square block of rubber that seals the side of the distributor and the connection is made on the outside. I started to look around for a replacement for this rubber block, but this thing seems to be made of un-obtainium. Does anyone know a source for a replacement for this rubber piece or have a unique idea to fix the issue ? Quote
TodFitch Posted September 2, 2015 Report Posted September 2, 2015 That through hole block sounds similar to the Bakelite bulkhead connector for the primary lead on my '33 Plymouth. My backup plan, if I ever need another, is to make a mold out of plaster of paris and then cast a new part using something like one of the harder varieties of Devcon Flexane. Quote

[/quo Are you talking about where the metal bracket that comes from the breaker plate and the wire from the coil attaches to the breaker plate. There was a rubber insert tha was placed in the slot or hole and this rubber piece has a slot for the arm or piece of metal that is part of the breaker plate then extends through the slot. The rubber piece was used so that the breaker plate would not go to ground against the metal body of the dizzy. Also if you look at the bottom of this metal piece you will also notice that it has a piece of bakelite material fused to the bottom also to act as a protection for grounding] If this is the part that you are looking for then go to ebay and do a search on 1935-48 NOS MoPar INSULATOR Autolite Distributor Plymouth Dodge Desoto Chrylser.
