Plymouthy Adams Posted July 8, 2015 Report Posted July 8, 2015 (edited) been a long time but back in the late 70's or earlier 80's a slant six in a fuelie version was turning 175 +/- in the quarter...remember the article on it but again..that was almost 2 decades ago and inline built like the one above has a very distinctive buzz in its audio signature.. Don Coatney Posted July 8, 2015 Author Report Posted July 8, 2015 I found this interesting article Wilford Day1 BBL (New) Joined: 05 Jul 2010 Posts: 5 Post subject: Re: Worlds fastsest /6? Not talkin drag but top speed at the salt flats? From Wilford Day. (oldodge). When we went after the record at Bonneville, the car we used was a new 1964 Barracuda (family car) running in "F Prod". After a couple of tries it finally set the record in 1966 at 143 mph with one 4 barrel carb, but the Ak Miller crew beat us the next day with a Hilborne injected 221 inch V8 Mustang at 144. The following year we raised the record again with a 1961 Lancer (race car). The engine was a 225, bored .030 over, and had three Weber side-drafts. Our two-way average was 145 mph. However, the day before, during a trial run, with a little tail-wind, we went 152.40. This shows that the Lancer had a lot of wind drag. In 1970 we ran a 170 inch engine with .030 over in "G Prod", and raised the record up to 134, from the previous 125 set by a Corvair. At the time we probably had the Worlds Fastest 6 Cylinder Sedan. https://books.google.com/books?id=Dv7IWoA2KbkC&pg=PA76&lpg=PA76&dq=wilford+day+bonneville&source=bl&ots=7PQUmHqdrR&sig=SwHAmMuJSwITJfD1hVVqc0hDmnE&hl=en&ei=BbAXTKqYONONnQeWhNDUCg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result#v=onepage&q=wilford%20day%20bonneville&f=false Quote
janan5243 Posted July 8, 2015 Report Posted July 8, 2015 When I was a still a young man, on Long Island, Islip raceway had figure 8 stock car races. In the 70's some of the drivers used modified /6's. They wound up fast compared to a v8. It was a small track, maybe an 1/8 mile oval. Also had an adjoining drag strip. Long gone now, new neighbors complained about noise. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 8, 2015 Report Posted July 8, 2015 it has never ceased top amaze me that folks would move from the city to be out into the country..once there then try to make their new enviroment to that of the city they just left... Quote

Don Coatney Posted July 8, 2015 Author Report Posted July 8, 2015 Perhaps museum was the wrong terminology. It was a fun place to poke around. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 8, 2015 Report Posted July 8, 2015 now the terms interesting and fun I got to agree with.. it is a very nasty humid and hot day and I am out cleaning up a mess my son left in the little building I let him utilize a bit back .....where is the Dolly Dodge now...as the song said, "My wife ran off with the garbage man, I don't miss that woman but somebody got to empty my can".
