1951 Cab swap with 1950 cab?

Recommended Posts

Hey fellas,

I'm slowly trying to get everything going on my '50 restoration and I have a question for the experts.  My original A pillars and hinge area on the 1950 cab I have are pretty trashed and rusted through in a few spots.  Since I will have to pay someone for my body work I was wondering if I could just swap out the cab for a 1951 that I saw for sale that's in much better shape overall (can probably just be blasted and painted).  Would the 51 cab be a bolt-in swap?  Would I be able to use my existing grill, hood and fenders too?  I thought I saw someone put a '52 grill on a '48 body so I'm thinking the cabs would be interchangeable too.  I understand the dashboard would be different but I can live with that, I kind of like the later style dash layout.  I'm just trying to see what my options are before I tear it apart.  Thank you.

should be ok.  the changes were all pretty much cosmetic between those years:

hood nose

grill

door exterior crease

door/window handles

wiper location (would require correct parts swapped)

gauges (would require correct parts swapped)

off the top of my head

Ya,you can use your grill and fenders and hood as long as their all either 50 or 51, and the gauges will be all different, and the 51 cab won't have the cross braces that go from the firewall to the rad support., which mean your hood props won't work on the 50 unless you add those brackets.

Other then that.....I think it's the same

If you can live with the dash change, and wiper change, you are good to go.

If the 50 cab is hurting only a little bit, the 51 can certainly work as a metal donor.

Great info fellas thank you!  I hope to have the truck home next week and I will post some photos of the disassembly, etc.  It's at a buddys garage where he brought the engine back to life and put on a new carb.
