joey4420 Posted March 11, 2015 Report Posted March 11, 2015 So I took the dodge out for lunch. Filled it with gas and drove around 20 miles or so. Then as I was pulling in to a friends auto body shop to ask a question the dodge spit and sputtered and would no longer accelerate. I pulled off the oil bath and if I partially choke the carb with my hand it will run perfect and it idles very well but as soon as I give it gas it sputters and dies. It seems like it is either not getting fuel or the carb is dirty. Thoughts. Sitting here on the side of the road waiting on the tow truck right now. Enjoying Hagerty plus. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 11, 2015 Report Posted March 11, 2015 could be either I would suspect trash in the carb, plugged line at tank or delivery to the pump or pump itself a few simple test will reveal the culprit first is to check pump output if that is good you just split your system and the odds Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 12, 2015 Report Posted March 12, 2015 Sounds to me like the accelerator pump is not working. With the air cleaner off use a flashlight and look down the throat of the carburetor as you rapidly open the throttle. You should see a big stream of raw gas every time you open the throttle. Quote
joey4420 Posted March 12, 2015 Author Report Posted March 12, 2015 I will check that tomorrow. Got the car into the garage about 30 minutes ago. I will tear into it and see what can be seen. Hoping for an easy fix. Quote
plymouthcranbrook Posted March 12, 2015 Report Posted March 12, 2015 Mine turned out to be the intake manifold gasket when it did the same as yours. Not too hard to change. Quote
joey4420 Posted March 12, 2015 Author Report Posted March 12, 2015 Well fuel pump is pumping fine.... Carb will stream fuel about 1/4-1/3 of the throttle then nothing (when engine is off) Look in the distributor and I don't see anything wrong, but I am not a distributor guru by any means, I need to check the vacuum advance with a vacuum pump. I know there are plus and minus' and people who like or dislike pertronix, but I did change the point to the Pertonix. I will admit if the distributor was on top of the engine and more visible I would have stayed points, but I have arthritis in both hands and working in the distributor where it is located trying to set points is not my idea of fun. With all that being said... I didn't see how the Pertonix would be the issue as it starts and idles very well and drove down the road for about 20 miles very nice as well, But I will take advice and do my best with it. Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 12, 2015 Report Posted March 12, 2015 Your accelerator pump should squirt the full stroke from closed to wide open. Remove the plunger and soak it in oil overnight. This film clip will help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGCKYA8KIiw Quote
joey4420 Posted March 12, 2015 Author Report Posted March 12, 2015 Well at least I know what the issue might be, sadly that isn't the carb on my car... I think I have a Stromberg. I guess it is time to pull the carb and rebuild it completely just to make my life easier. Quote
