desoto1939 Posted February 16, 2015 Report Posted February 16, 2015 Well just got home late last night and beat the snow and winter storm from Asheville NC. Went down and did some touring and went to the Biltmore estate that belonged to the Vanderbuilts. Boy money did have its place in time I have now officially changed my last name Vanderhart and we are the long long lost cousins to the Vanderbuilts. I have attached some pictures of the 1913 Steven - Duryea that was used by the Vanderbuilts. Enjoy: Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com 1 Quote
BigDaddyO Posted February 16, 2015 Report Posted February 16, 2015 We have one of the Vanderbilt's mansions near here in Hyde Park,N.Y. Been there a couple times. The Vanderbilt that owned it was one of the least flamboyant of them all so it is 'low key'. Yeah, by Vanderbilt standards maybe. The main house has 50 rooms or so, many were servants quarters for guests. The estate was originally some 600 acres right on the eastern bank of the Hudson River. It was used ONLY in the Autumn so they must have had 3 more homes somewhere. 1 Quote
Mark D Posted February 17, 2015 Report Posted February 17, 2015 Been to the Ashville place a few years ago. Looking forward to seeing the New York version this year. Quote
greg g Posted February 17, 2015 Report Posted February 17, 2015 Well they did have their little mountain camp in the Adirondacks for those long summer weekends when they weren't at their sea side cottage in Rhode Island. See Sagamore and the breakers, and the town house at 1 West 57th in NYC. The family was their own little real estate boom...... Quote
