The first example in your illustration confuses me Don.

The engine and the axle are at the same angle and in motion (axle moving up and down) will remain parallel.

If the first illustration showed the axle pointing up to a horizontal engine ...I would understand that.

As the axle rises in the second illustration, it to will be in the same position of illustartion one.

Am I missing something about Illustration one?

Ooops....just answered my own question. The angle of the axle (up) makes for a divergent angle from the suface as opposed to maintaining a 90 deg relationship in the second illustration.
