Norm's Coupe Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 I seem to have a strange pet all of a sudden. Usually when out cutting the grass the birds stay away from the house and yard. Last night while cutting the grass a robin kept following me around, walking not flying. He always stayed only about 4 or 5 feet away. He was also picking up the grass as I cut. Then about 20 minutes or so after I finished he finally flew away, so he's not injured. Today that same robin is out there (can tell because he has a strange looking neck and color is a little off), plus he just sits there looking at the house. Just thought this was unusual and would share it. Birds usually won't let you get that close normally, much less follow you around the yard like that. At least I've never had one do that. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 He's just scoping the place and checking your attitude..he is just waiting at the chance to use your place for a wild party when you go off...they don't call him rockin' Robin for nothing... Quote
eric wissing Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 I helped a guy use a sod cutter once to remove a bad section of yard as we rolled up the peices a Robin was following a feet back to get grubs. I started picking them up and tossing them to the Robin. With the right food I think just about any animal will come close. Don't try this with bears. Eric Quote

Eric Guess that would/could explain him, I just never had one follow me like that before. Could also explain why we have so many robins around. Wife has a feeder, but it's a mix of food. However, we also have one large Hosta garden on one side of the garage and others around the yard. Those Hosta's draw the grubs. I wasn't near any Hosta plants when he was following me though. Quote
Ed Griffin Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 Norm, that happens almost every time I cut my lawn. Last couple of times has been one Robin like yours, catching the black crickets, etc as I cut. Robin's dont seem to scare easily. Funny to see them walking around you close while cutting huh? After I cut I usually watch the rest of the birds hit the ground doing the same thing while I'm cooling off. Had to put off cutting a few days not long ago. Had a Wabbit and two bunnies smack in the middle of the yard. Only reason I saw them is almost walked up on them while walking the dog. Bunnies were so little one could barley hop away. Hope the cat didnt find them.. . Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 Norm; Never heard of this but I suspect this robin was gay and hitting on you. Quote
RHDSP15C Posted June 16, 2007 Report Posted June 16, 2007 My old car lives in an airplane hangar and pigeons are constantly trying to find a way in to nest. One on side there is an internal box gutter at about eight feet high which has to be cleaned out regularly because of the pigeons. One day last summer I was working at my bench below the gutter when I saw something move, figured it was a young pigeon which had got thru the gap . I stood on a five gallon oil drum and felt for the bird with my hand - instantly I froze - I had hold of a four foot Eastern Brown snake - I was real lucky because the snake couldn't turn to strike as it was laid out in the gutter. I came off that drum like a rocket. I quit work early that day. Several weeks later I found it had 20 odd young under the floor of the office and they came crawling out one by one. The birds don't come around anymore and I watch where I put my hands. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted June 16, 2007 Author Report Posted June 16, 2007 RHDSP15C, You and Rodney should form your own snake club. Rodney found a garder snake under the seat of his car recently. Of course, they are nothing like your Eastern Brown snake, the garder snake won't hurt you. As for my bird friend he was back again and a little closer to the house now. We must be going to the birds. Last weekend while sitting in the kitchen eating breakfast had two wild geese (male & female) walk past the back porch (only about 3 feet from it), on into the driveway, went about half way down the driveway and turned into the neighbors front yard, then on down the street. Stopped watching them then. About an hour or so later my wife called me to the living room. Then she pointed to the street and said there they are again. They were walking right up the middle of the street going the other way now. Must have been out for their weekend stroll or something. First time I had seen geese in the yard since removing our 18 foot pool in the backyard in the late 80's. Then they would come every spring for a swim in the pool. Ed, Know what you mean about the rabbits. I've actually run over a nest with small babies in it before by accident. Since then I keep an eye out for them. Haven't seen one for awhile but after that accident I just go around the nest and cut it later after they were gone. Think the reason we don't see many rabbits anymore is because of the stray cats running around the neighborhood. Have this one cat that keeps coming in my yard. Then he will go under my shed. Don't know what's under there, but must be something he likes under there. Quote

1just4don Posted June 16, 2007 Report Posted June 16, 2007 "IF" you have deer in your yards,,and that goes for anyone here, build them a 4 poster feeder with salt, mineral, or corn, just a little EVERY day!! Then rig it with insecticide flips so they rub the skin while eating. Deer have TICKS,,,and those ticks can and WILL ruin your life!!!,period!!! OR the life of your wife, kids, grandkids, best friends, right on down the line!! Having this insecticide out on the deer feeder prevents MOST of the ticks from your yard. For the rest of them you should continuaully spray your yards with a benign spray such as Tempo,,,which is made from geranium flowers and has zero smell!! You might change up once in a while and use a permitherin!!(If you arent allergic to that) Dont ask me how I know!!! BUT, tis a FACT!!! You get it, docs dont care and furthermore dont know about it,,,you dont die,,,you just WISH you did!!! It takes a VERY special doc to pull you out of THIS,,,and some arent THAT lucky!!! be well--don-- Quote

Norm's Coupe Posted June 16, 2007 Author Report Posted June 16, 2007 The bird might be rehersing for the upcoming movie...BIRDS 2 by Alfred Hitchcock Jr. Reg, I was wondering when someone was going to come up with that one. Guess most of the people on the forum are a little too young to remember that movie. Quote
