Plymouthy Adams Posted September 25, 2014 Report Posted September 25, 2014 is that anything near/alike the Powerflite transmission that Chrysler developed in 1954...or is this some aftermarket concept that may or may not be applicable..and once that is established..what areas you wish to discuss... zHxIxPxPxIxEz Posted September 25, 2014 Author Report Posted September 25, 2014 Yes the 1954 powerflite and any other trans simaller (maby the ford o matic is like it in design) it would also be cool to see what other people have done with their powerfleet's, modifications, painting ect. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 25, 2014 Report Posted September 25, 2014 so you really have no technical question.,.cosmetics and comparison to others...well as the others will not bolt up without an adapter and you not specifying an exact model..what can be added? As for the Ford..Ford paid good money for Mopar to sell them a working automatic in the 50's..I still am a loss on what the Powerfleet may be however..can you provide a link...? Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 25, 2014 Report Posted September 25, 2014 As far as what color to paint your transmission the choice is yours. Might look good in psychedelic Quote

So what transmissions can bolt up with what adapters? What about changing out the torque converter to a modern one? And sory about "power fleet" I just misspelled it Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 26, 2014 Report Posted September 26, 2014 (edited) Not to cut you short here but have you searched the forum for specific topics on automatic transmission adapters..there are a number of threads that discuss this topic that should give you some degree of background information that will help you shape a particular question toward one particular tranny over that of another..I assume you have interest in converting your car to an automatic.....most folks doing this usually have a donor laying about that tweaks their interest in the transfer process..it is very difficult to reply to this thread as their have been no specifics mentioned... I already have a powerflite im just curious about them. I cant seem to find much info on them other than whati already know Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 26, 2014 Report Posted September 26, 2014 Can you tell us specifically what you like about the Powerflite? What you specifically dislike? What your objective is? Dependability? Stoplight racing? Ease of instillation? What do you already know about this transmission? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 26, 2014 Report Posted September 26, 2014 Unfortunately the 54 model year service manual does no include the Powerflite as it was a mid year change...seems the books were already published by that time for release to the shops and public...you will need to find the specific brochures related mid year production from Chrysler or step up to the 55 model year book for specifications. The Powerflite was a very welcome feature for Plymouth and even when the Torqueflite 3 speed was released later..the two speed was so popular that it continued in production for a number of years along side the 3 speed. Is your Powerflite operational?? do you suspect a short life with it...maybe I am just at a loss to understand your searching for a replacement.... Quote

I wish it was manual (I have never owned a manual car). The question I could ask as a start I point would be, the toruqe conver never seems to shift at the same times. Yes plymouthy I expect a short life beacuse I do not totally understand it. I am still learning how automatic transmissions work (im only 17) Edited September 26, 2014 by zHxIxPxPxIxEz Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 26, 2014 Report Posted September 26, 2014 torque converters do not shift..moderns ones are designed to lock up though.....you can start with a general primer on automatic transmissions and progress from there. Once you understand a few of the basic elements of the unit and get a understanding of how it works...more would be apparent to you and you may even have a bit of peace of mind in ownership...it has lasted some 60 years and still working...you should wish for that from your own body...lol Quote

But "shifting" (I do not know what to call it) is still akward. Fluid may be low? Also did these old transmissions have non spline cut reverse gears? In reverse mine whines slightly at high speeds (much like a manual vehicle would). Edited September 26, 2014 by zHxIxPxPxIxEz Quote
zHxIxPxPxIxEz Posted September 26, 2014 Author Report Posted September 26, 2014 (edited) Also, are there any common modifacations done to these tranys?if so what aspects do these modifacations change in the drivability. Edited September 26, 2014 by zHxIxPxPxIxEz Quote
zHxIxPxPxIxEz Posted September 30, 2014 Author Report Posted September 30, 2014 (edited) Follow up to my search for info: I drained the trans (not the tourqe converter) and filled it up. I then proceeded to add more than what came out/what it needs beacuse the trans level stick (trans dip stick?) Said it was dry yes it was in neutral Like its supposed to be. All so I filled the trans directly from the checker tube and no fluid was on the ground. The reason I changed it other than it being who knows how old is. I got a slight burning smell, and she sliped out of drive for a second. The fluid that came out was not burt smelling however and it had no metal in it. My air breather for the trans had a 1" thick coating of grease on it that I cleaned off befor the scary trans incident. And befor it did the weird drive slip, burned smell it coughed up some trans fluid and it came out from the dip stick. So I serious nee your guy's help to understand this weird ass old trans. Thanks Edited September 30, 2014 by zHxIxPxPxIxEz Quote
nonstop Posted September 30, 2014 Report Posted September 30, 2014 Check your kickdown adjustment, shift linkage adjustments, and then fluid pressures. That will help tell you what's going on inside the transmission. Has it been sitting? Mine sat for years and the fluid had turned into a waxy sediment and was blocking passages. I was having shift problems and it turned out to be my governor. Yours sounds like it may be different. There are many trouble shooting links online and a trouble shooting section in the manual. zHxIxPxPxIxEz Posted September 30, 2014 Author Report Posted September 30, 2014 I need to get the transmission book today. I drained it and like you said the fluid was less than oil. Yeah I got it from Emmy dad when I was ten. It didnt run until now(im 17 now) why does the dipstick say its empty when I put jn more fluod than what came out? How many quarts does this trans take? Any advice on how to clean the tourqe converter air breather? Thanks man Quote
