I'm looking for something to use for gaskets for the tail light lenses on my 49 Plymouth. It looks like the originals were probably very thin rubber cord, like 1/16 inch diameter or less. I tried using the gasket material intended for screens but it seems a little too thick. Does anyone know if this stuff is available anywhere. I thought there was a post on it some time ago but I can't find it. The gaskets on my taillights went into a very narrow groove and the red lenses screwed down over them.

Joe as I started reading this I was going to suggest window spline. Then I see you tried it already. Did you go to the glass shop and ask what sizes they have? I just got a few feet for my 46 WC speedometer glass lense and they had many sizes to choose from.

Were they a flat type of gasket that the base has a slightly raised center high ridge or a round groove type narrow slot.

Not familiarly with the 49 type seal as mine is a 50. Very different. :(

If just a groove I'd suggest a hydraulic place where you should find something to fit or cut one the fit a a 45 degree angle each end made long enough and apply super glue. They used to sell kits with different sizes of o-ring rubber to make your own in the field for repairs. Held 2500 lbs. pressure at least for a while!  Should hold taillight gasket together forever!  ;)
