Is there any way of telling by smell or feel what kind of brake fluid is in a car when you got it. Not practical to contact previous owner.

If relatively new, then DOT5 has a purple dye in it. Seems to disappear over time.

DOT3 and DOT5 smell different but I have no idea how to describe the differences.

DOT3 is a pretty good paint remover while DOT5 will not harm paint (I suspect that because of its silicon content it probably would make painting over an are you spilled it difficult though).
